Club Dark Star

Hi guys, just thought id jump in- ive emailed Fred to put an order in last week, and got a response from him! After waiting a few days after sending my initial email, Fred responded and was very helpful. Ive paid my money- so i hope im not being ripped off, but all seemed above board from my conversation with him!

I was told a 2 week turn around from ordering to completion. So it doesnt look like Fred's dead!

That's all really great news.
I hope his absence was cause he finally finished development on the 5 string DarkStar.

Then I can build a new J5-DS.

+1. I'd love to hear what a DarkStar does with a low B.

While I flirted with the idea of producing a clone of the DarkStar, I repeatedly stated that I wasn't looking to compete with Fred, just fill a void if one existed. Since apparently it does not exist, I'm very content to continue being a fan of DarkStar pickups and proud owner of 2 DarkStar'ed basses, a fan of Hammon Engineering, and a fan of Fred Hammon. And probably a threepeat customer. And an endorsement from the pocketbook is about the best endorsement anyone can give.

Edwin, I've always admired your Starfire. It was a big influence in modifying my Jack Casady a ways back. Please do post your new setup!

Here's a couple of shots. Although they look rectangular, they are actually trapezoidal pickups when you look at them through a sheet of magnetic paper. So far, the electronics need to be finished, I've got an ACG preamp in there, but a Series I/II card standing by to be installed once I get all the components together. Without the dummy coil, I'm getting a fair amount of noise that changes with my orientation. I'll probably also shield the entire interior, using a piece of copper to cover the f-hole from the inside. Matt Bergdorf of Woodsong's Lutherie here in Boulder did the work. The hardest part was getting the mounting rings to match the curved surface of the bass. He also installed the bridge and tailpiece.

Overall, it sounds great.
