It ended up beeing just an innocent mock-up, because I didn't had the nerves to modify this 100% original '74 Burgundy baby.

YES! I had some mails with fred too, very glad he's fine, finally! ordered some pickups in the way....![]()
OK, I've got a different take on this. I've now got a pair of Dark Stars that I took from my Starfire when I installed the Alembics and now I'm looking for a bass in which to install them. Any ideas?
TIA
If you can't find a place for them, I'll take them off your hands...seriously!
I appreciate the offer, but these pickups have serious sentimental value. They are some of the really early ones and toured all over the country with me for a few years. Plus, I miss playing them!
GREAT NEWS!!!
Beautiful bass!
I'm very much a fan of the Longhorn design & ironically, ordered a single DS from Fred last June, (jeez, I lost track, that was a year ago...). Anyway, the pickup is intended for my Coral (totally hollow) Longhorn...a single DS should do the job, afterall, the Fender Precision proved years ago what a single, great pickup can do...

my version of the Dano is really different from the original, it's made from a semi hollow padauk body with set in padauk neck and Pao rosa fretboard plus a 780mm scale, the sound would have been really different with the original dano way of construction... so using a DS on an original could be... mmmm a lost for a good darkstar...
perhaps...
by the way you give me envie to remake one like this with DS...![]()
So if you were going to do a bass with just one darkstar, where would you put it?
P-bass position makes sense, and there are photos here to prove people do it.
Up against the neck in the mudbucker position is something I've seen too.
I've seen dual darkstars in a J bass, but I've never seen just a single one in the bridge position like a single pickup stingray.
I'm a p-bass kind of guy, so I'm considering the P or mudbucker location, but wondering what a soloed bridge position darkstar sounds like.

a Darkstar could make Hitler sound good...
Who built yours?
Thanks

I didn't play that one, but I played a similarly configured Lakland once. It had a pre installed, and I do recall boosting the bass slightly to get the sound I wanted. But just a little--the DS has a lot of low end available in most positions.I saw a natural ash Lakland with a Dark Star in the Stingray position. Apparently it needed a touch of bass boost to hold its own.
