Club Fbass (Part 10!)

One of them was fretted and the other fretless with white lines. I loved the "twins" a lot -- they were pretty much the only basses I played for a long time -- but when I got my BN6 and AC6, they became "practice basses" I'd use only for practice so I could keep the strings on my gigging basses fresh.

Eventually I sold them very cheaply to someone who assured me that he adored these basses, but then he turned around and sold them on after a month or so for a profit. I felt used, but my heart was in the right place and that's the important thing.

Darn, that was going to be my next question. I was going to ask if you still had them and if they were for sale. But too late. I wouldn't have sold them that's for sure... so you already have a BN6 and the AC 6, so you're well equipped in basses that's for sure... I would've felt used also if that had happened to me...

Yeah, for six string basses I now have a BN6, BN6 Limited Edition Replica, an AC6-signature, an AC6-classic, and an AC6-fretted neck through with dual magnetic pickups. I'm fairly loaded with 6 string basses, but it doesn't keep me from wondering about a VF6 or another BN6 like Yohann's.

I really liked my JPs, their necks in particular, but the neck dive ... wow. I never thought it was bad until I got Fbasses, now I just can't fight that Yamaha neck anymore. I never realized how much I was holding it up with my left hand until I came back to it after playing Fs.

So while I definitely loved them, and played them almost exclusively for years, I don't miss them really.

I do miss the insets in the finger board though. I've thought many times about getting a BN6 with something like this instead of dot markers.

WOW!!! All those F's... there must be a 12 step program for bass players like you and me that just can't get enough of them... lmao!!! Take care and enjoy them!!! And knowing George, I'm sure that he can put insets in the finger board for you, as they can do mods to any bass.

Oh hell... now I know that you need a 12 step program for bass players.. lmao... But good for you, especially all of those basses to have fun with, I wouldn't know which one to choose when leaving for a gig.... hahaha!!! But I understand you and your weakness for basses... If my wife didn't bring back down to earth once in a while, I'd have just as many as you... I have a 70's P Bass, the Yamaha TRB 6P II, two basses brought back from Argentina, made in Argentina (fretless and fretted), a String Bass, one of the first Framus' electric basses, and now the new addition the BNF 6... hahaha.. I'm a 1.5 year F-Bass convert and will not ever part with my BN5. With 4 young kids, I had to sell all my other basses to get this one and I wouldn't change a thing.

We all know the excellence of George's basses and it has significantly contributed to great improvements in my playing ability. Well a result of this is also significantly more gig activity. With this increase in gig activity I also have a lot of gigs in less than ideal environments and bringing a $3k+ bass is really not the best idea. So now I am on the hunt for a 5 string to work in these situations. The issue is the playability of the BN5 and how I have grown used to the 1 3/4 nut, 19mm spacing (could go tighter though here) and excellent tone.

I've started trying a few used basses out and like the EBMM Sterling 5 playability and Yamaha TRB 5. Anyone have any recommendations that would be a good fit for what I am looking for? [Or does anyone have a beat up BN5 they want to sell? ]

I think your best option based on you comments is to look around for a non-custom BN5 used. I have a very custom BN6 nearly completed and plan to keep my basic BN5 for gig's just like you describe. I don't think you need to look for a beat up BN5 either, I'm sure you can find a decent one for a fair price.

Some people would have the same dilemma with taking out a new EBMM or Yamaha. Basses are meant to be played not put in a shrine

Absolutely and I agree. It's like owning a high end sports car... those rides often stay indoors for the winter. Out of the 20 - 30 gigs booked for this summer, there are 5 - 6 where I don't want to bring the BN as they aren't the most illustrious venues. If I had limitless cash then no prob, I'd be be doing stage acrobatics with the BN!

+1. The recession made it a buyer's market; you can find deals if you keep an eye out for them.

I'll keep an eye out for a deal for you as well.

There is nothing like seeing a stolen BN5 posted here to get a guy to think twice about where he brings his, but rather than switch to a lesser brand, I'd seriously just keep looking for a good deal somewhere.
