BTW, I'm surprised you've been eying it at all... you've always struck me as a "I've found the one" (BN5) kind of guy who wouldn't let his eyes wander.

In the last chapter of our club thread, BIg O made the following announcement (I did the bolding)...

I am VERY much a push through the pain and get the job done kind of guy, and while that has worked well for me, I'm finding it has a significant downside as well.
While the docs were looking at my injured thumb, I learned that pain and numbness that I thought were related to the thumb injury are actually carpal tunnel.
I have only been casually aware of carpal tunnel, but now, of course, I'm intensely interested in learning much more about it.
I mention it as a cautionary exhortation to my fellow bass players.
I doubt my carpal tunnel was the result of all my hours in the wood shed (ha ha ha), it was probably more computer related, but it's threat to what I enjoy is still a factor.
Whether it's bass playing, or computer keyboarding (and mousing), or work or pleasure related activity... please listen to your bodies! You'll regret it later if you don't.

I can diagnose this pretty quick
How do your position your wrist when plucking, straight or on the bass?
cool that you have both clips up now. it reinforced exactly what i heard in all of these basses through my own rig. the coppolo clips had that grindy almost rock sound without the airy sparkle the vf5 had. the fender was even more thin and airy than the vf5 which can be heard in my clips that i posted so you can imagine when i ab'd it with all those coppolos why i thought it didnt sound anything like a late 70's jazz. that fender i have right now sounds like every other late 70's jazz ive owned. the pickups arent that hot.
however, i do like the slightly hotter pickups in a 60's bass and i wish the bridge pickup in particular was just wound a little hotter in the 60's vf5. however, there was so much variation in pickup winding in the 60's that both the f bass and coppolo could end up sounding just like a an old jazz depending on the bass your comparing it to and who wound the pickups that day in fullerton.
+1 They all sound very nice to me, and again, within my personal definition of what an ash/maple 70's oriented J should sound like.
We need to get someone to put up similar clips of the new 70's Classic Nordy, which seems to be the other 'boutique 70's J' that 'hits the mark'!

They can sound pretty darned good. matters of consistency or QC aside, they seem to be the bench mark much of the time. I read lots of "My ($6K) bass almost nails a Fender sound!
" comments on TB. No slam intended. Just an observation that I'm sure I'm not the only one to make. Of course to find a Fender that feels, plays and sounds like that same $6K bass would be a daunting task because most of them just don't. But if you're one of the lucky ones to find that rare gem...

I want a VF5 alder/RW in a sunburst finish more than I want a Fender!

They can sound pretty darned good. matters of consistency or QC aside, they seem to be the bench mark much of the time. I read lots of "My ($6K) bass almost nails a Fender sound!
No slam intended. Just an observation that I'm sure I'm not the only one to make. Of course to find a Fender that feels, plays and sounds like that same $6K bass would be a daunting task because most of them just don't. But if you're one of the lucky ones to find that rare gem...

+1 If I could find a Fender 5 string that played and felt like these basses, I'd play one.
To your point above, IMO it is perfectly consistent to me to think that a bass that plays like an MTD or Fodera or whatever your best example of 'top of the line' is, but sounds reasonably like a vintage Fender (an old one!) with a much more even response through the neck and a top of the line preamp is 'worth the money'
Also, most of these 'boutique' J's are in the lower to mid $3k range, unless you go crazy on fancy top woods, etc.
A cheap watch keeps time as well as a more expensive one... but there's a lot more to a watch (for at least some of us) than pure time keeping
the guts in the nord are voiced more like the f bass guts (although not quite as thin flat so it doesnt need as much boost) so with a northern ash body, that bass would slam. i was very impressed with it even with that 9 and half pound bass i played. the one vic has right now should sound the same as the one i played.

haha. call me crazy, but even after getting these f basses im still gigging my fernandes with my main working band. i think the thing sounds f'n great.
that and i like being able to just leave it lying around and in case i got to give some drunk a chingaso upside the head, i dont have to worry about cracking a 3 thousand dollar bass
ive got this fusion hit coming up in february though and both these f's are going to get put to work.

thats whats cool about this 70's vf5. yours was a little more because of the skunk stripe neck, but depending on your dealer, you can get one of these for around 2800 or 2900 bucks which is pretty damn good in the high end world.

Yep. It's something that so many people ignore because they don't want to start over learning what is a new technique, essentially. I have known a few very respected local players who have hit that wall and it didn't come out pretty.

Thanks for the love guys! Ken, you're right - the night we recorded the clips was at a smaller venue so I used my LDS 112 cab and it was more than enough for me. And yeah - when you play some nice tunes with a drummer that good it makes it easy to hold it down on bass!
