I am VERY much a push through the pain and get the job done kind of guy, and while that has worked well for me, I'm finding it has a significant downside as well.

While the docs were looking at my injured thumb, I learned that pain and numbness that I thought were related to the thumb injury are actually carpal tunnel.

I have only been casually aware of carpal tunnel, but now, of course, I'm intensely interested in learning much more about it.

I mention it as a cautionary exhortation to my fellow bass players.

I doubt my carpal tunnel was the result of all my hours in the wood shed (ha ha ha), it was probably more computer related, but it's threat to what I enjoy is still a factor.

Whether it's bass playing, or computer keyboarding (and mousing), or work or pleasure related activity... please listen to your bodies! You'll regret it later if you don't.

Thanks Tom - I've been away in the Caribbean (St Lucia and Grenada) since Christmas Day, so I've been off my computer until today.

I actually go for surgery on my left wrist this Thursday (Jan 14), and on the 29th for my right. All the tests show that I have a narrow carpal tunnel area that is aggravated by my playing bass, golf, computer use and arthritis. By relieving the pressure (they snip the covering tendon) I should be back to normal very quickly. It's now an outpatient procedure - in for surgery in the morning, back to the office at noon!

I'll let you know how it goes!

Love that tone, it is quite different then the LM5 at least in your clip samples. I'm gonna say your LG5 with Hi Beams sounds more like the LM then does the F. The F has a pretty cool voice more modern and airy then I'd associate with a vintage 70s but in the family.

Great playing Jason that is some killer stuff you guys got going on...

I almost wish I could find one of these to mess around with. A friend has a Fernandez strat and he likes it as well or better than any Fender he's tried. I'm not sure if they're all "that good", but I think they're one of the true "sleepers" out there in a big way.

+1 to all you said. Really $3,000 isn't a ridiculous price to pay for these high end basses especially taking into account inflation. Just sounds like a lot. Quite reasonable actually. As you say, add tops, bindings etc can make them pricey but the amazing number of fabulous basses that can be had in the roughly $2-3K range is mind boggling!

Of course when I was a kid (in the 60's) a Cadillac was a $5,000.00 car brand new! :eek: That was a big number back then. So $3,000 is around what $300 was back when Fender was almost your only choice. :bassist:

Interesting thoughts, so I went to Invalid Link Removed to get their take on this matter.

According to westegg.com...

What cost $300 in 1962 would cost $2113.06 in 2008.

What cost $300 in 1976 would cost $1122.60 in 2008.

So yes, a large amount of the value of modern basses is swallowed up by inflation...

Interestingly, if you run the calculator the other way...

What cost $3000 in 2008 would cost $801.71 in 1976.

I say interesting, because that is VERY close to what I paid for my Fender Jazz bass in 1976.

Thanks man - and yeah that Rhodes is one of the best sounding that I've seen. Matt (the guy playing it) is an expert on those and knows how to repair and tune them. It's a really fun group to play with.

its definitely a weird bass. 1 5/8" nut and 17.5mm spacing stock. theres all kinds of dips in the fretboard that make certain areas odd to play. my tech had to do some serious spot treatment leveling to get it where i like it. im thinking about having a replacement neck made for it.

i picked up some aeros for it for 50 bucks and put a 17mm hipshot b on it and have a sad onboard im waiting to install in it. even after getting a neck made ill have around 600 bucks in it. even right now it sounds as good as anything.

Years ago I told a group of friends that we'll look back on history and say that YouTube was one of the major cultural changes of our lifetimes... I LOVE that site and am very grateful to people like you who put such great quality entertainment up there for us to enjoy for free.

You seem to have way more experience then I do but of the late 70s Fenders I've played they sounded more like the LM clip to me. I don't know that I've ever heard a passive Fender bass sound quite like Ken's F clip.

was this recently and what amps were you playing through? on my myspace on the tune lusitanos, im using the fender but playing through a really grindy warwick rig with a 15 cab and it didnt sound anything like the direct clips ive posted. sounds more like the ac, but was the rig's fault. same kind of thing happens when i used to play through an amp bh420.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really digging the F bass clip.

I have only owned a 73 jazz so I've never had a long term relationship with a late 70s so all my experiences are with someone else's not so memorable rig.

whether or not you like the f bass sound or not really isnt my concern;) just trying to see what your frame of reference is in regards to what a late 70's jazz sounds like.
