Club Fbass (thread 12)

I'm watching / listening to this right now and wanted to make you guys aware it's been posted on YouTube.

It is an hour long live concert of Jaco Pastorious. The trombonist is astonishing! He frequently plays two notes at once, but he's no one trick pony.

I used to play French Horn as well (you may have seen me on "talkfrenchhorn.com" ;)), which helps heighten my admiration for the abilities the trombonist has.

Anyway, even if you are playing the concert in the background, it's a very nice listen.

It's also great to see Jaco in such a support role, given that it is just a trio (drums, bass, trombone).
BTW, about 40 minutes into it, he plays Portrait of Tracy -- the best I have yet heard him play it live.

Speaking of Jaco...

I've been thinking lately about how many of my all time favorite bass players were very true to one (or sometimes two) basses.

Instead of having an "arsenal" on hand, I'm intrigued at how many of the very greats primarily played one bass.

Jaco Pastorious
had his fretless 60s "Bass of Doom" Fender Jazz bass.

Marcus Miller stuck with his fretted 70s Fender Jazz bass for decades.

I know less about Stanley Clarke, but it appears he played his Alembic mostly when playing an electric, and of course he has a mountain of upright bass work as well.

Alain Caron, of course, has his blue BN6 and his AC6.

And Victor Wooten has changed Foderas over the years, but for the most part they have been fairly similar in terms of playability.

Of course if you are in a cover band, you may need several different tones and looks and thus need many basses... I just think it is interesting how many of the greats though are known for that signature bass as well.

thank you for the link Tom.
Love it !

Well, the trombonist is Albert Mangelsdorff, he was to trombone what Jaco was to bass, really one of the biggest names in Jazz trombone.

Ok. Seriously. What is it about Fbass???? I thought I couldn't swing a 6, and I cannot stop playing it. I can't! I listed it again and am pulling. I'm insane. Absolutely insane. I LOVE the tone so much, that's it's making me crazy. Best B string I've used bar none. I've tried a ton of higher end stuff too and it's the most articulate and fat sounding bass I've had to date. I am absolutely in love. The BN6 is the greatest. It's got me thinking of flipping my MTD 435 for a MTD 635! Or another Fbass!!! Didn't think I'd EVER say that!

I hear you. My 19mm BN6 is so comfortable to play. Much more then many other 18mm sixers I've had. Maybe it's the thin neck profile. I'm really glad I scored a Fbass 5er as well. Love it too. Tony the Tiger said it best. They're great!
