But look what else is in the used section... I had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't one of mine:

As a policy I try to be careful to not compare bass makers in a way that might offend bass owners. It doesn't matter how accurate you strive to be in such comparisons, it's just hard to win in making a point with that strategy.

It's like a group parents talking about their children as their kids play on the playground. If you happen to say someone's kid is kind of ugly, or below par in any way, you've got an argument on your hands and odds are at least one party isn't arguing rationally.

That said, when it comes to 5-string basses, I think there are a lot of luthiers who do it right. Consequently, I don't have a single favorite as much as I do an A list. In fact, I don't think anyone could definitively declare any one bass maker as the "best," including Fodera, when it comes to 4- and 5-string basses.

Build quality can be expressed as factual, but after that there are pretty much just differences, some of which appeal more to some players and some which don't.

But when it comes to 6-string basses, for ME at least, Fbass does stand above the crowd. That 34.5 inch scale length is just the sweet spot for B strings to sound and play solid, and for C strings to play sweet and not tinny. Then there is the balance on the strap which puts more of the finger board under your face, making it much easier to play a fretless bass in tune.

Fbass has competitors on build quality, looks, etc., but those two things set George's 6-string basses apart for me. No matter how pretty or well built another sixer may be, George can build it just as well and just as pretty, AND have it play so unbelievably well thanks to the position on the strap and the scale length.

When it comes to 4- and 5-string basses, there are a bunch of luthiers who I love. But when it comes to 6-string basses, I can't find a reason for it to be anything other than an Fbass.
