Regarding how the upper horn is sculpted, I think both look good. I’m guessing there is less sculpting on the topped basses to preserve more of exotic woods visual characteristics.
For the non-topped bases though, it’s cool and comfortable. That Charcoal BN is a beauty too (I own that one
).
One of the things I like about Fbass body shaping in general is that it’s unique, and pleasing to the eye. I would say that they are the first non-traditional shapes bass I’ve ever purchased.

they sure are lovely, all of em. I had a non topped BN6 that was just gorgeous. It had one of the best bursts ever, IMO. George sure knows how to design a bass, and the crew sure knows how to build them!
I think it has more to do with bending the top veneer to fit the contours of the upper horn...there's only so far they can go, so they decrease the amount of carve there.
My new VF5....this bad boy is a keeper!!!

It's not new....just new to me.
It came from another TB member.
Highly likely it can from Donovan's shop.

Man, what a great Fbass booth at NAMM this year! Well, every year, of course, but having just come back from NAMM, I am still amazed by their booth this year. The standouts were the BN5 with the humbuckers (with coil tap options on each pickup), the VF5 P/J, and my favorite was the 40th Anniversary 4-string. That bass has amazing mix of punch/attack/clarity/fullness up and down the fingerboard.

That BN6 in the background is gas inducing and the VFPJ is also a beauty.
Thank you for this post, Tom. I'm so curious about the humbucking pickups on the BN series... how the controls work and what the tone is like.

Standard control layout, plus two 3-way switches for each pickup, for both coils parallel, single-coil, both coils serial. Lots of tonal variations with this setup. I believe it is an option, now, on just about any model.
Man, I was trying to tell myself it wouldn't be that good!! I'm finding that bass really tempting, how did the neck feel and how heavy was it? Thanks!
