Club Fbass (thread 13)

I see you're selling the F to fund an ACG. After spending way too much time and money checking out a whole bunch of different basses, I now play only three instruments; a pair of Fs (BN5 and AC5) and an ACG (Uber Finn). While different in significant ways, these builders share some similarities: very high quality craftsmanship, innovation, and unique tonality. And both are highly attentive to their clientele. When I win the lottery I'm going to have each of them build me one more bass.
Absolutely the truth! I may end up just keeping the BNF6. I sold a couple other items and the ACG is very close to being paid for. I figure that I might as well keep it. I do love how this bass plays and sounds. Great workmanship for sure!

Hello there, just to keep the pulse on this dear thread, below an FBass in action, this is Thor (fretted AC6, unbelievable instrument) during a gig about 1 year ago. In spite of the noise and the less-than-desirable sound, you can feel Thor's warmth through the video. I hope you like it

Hey...Wildwest....some great lines in that video!!!!...well done!!

Need a little help please.
Getting my first FBass - a BN5.
George gave me the option of his strings or regular strings and I chose his exposed core strings. I don't have any recent experience with this type of string, but I did use them exclusively for years back in the 80s (when Superwound strings were available).
I've read some people have problems with exposed core strings on an F Bass so would like to know what the consensus is for strings on an F Bass.
Thanks!

Hi there, in my BNF6 I would not use any other strings: it give the bass an amazing warm ring I can't reproduce with other string sets. The high C string (my bass goes BEADGC) is a little tougher to control as it is pretty thin, nothing that you can't get used to with some practice.

The only thing is that F's strings are exposed core, so remember that if you change to 'normal' strings afterwards you will need to lower the action to get the same action you had with the exposed core ones.

im a huge fan of the FBASS exposed core strings...great clarity, just the perfect tension, the B string is huge, and last for ever!...when they get a little dirty I use little alcohol swab and wipe each string down...just like brand new again!!...$5 for a pack of 100 at walmart!

but ...I find you MUST take the option of stringing "through" body only...if you don't , the ...exposed part is too prevalent above the bridge pickup!!...and you can have some over tones above the 12th fret depending on your string height...the lower the more pronounced.IME
....hope that makes sense to you!? That is the only downside to these strings!!!

So I'm still working with George and Marcel on my next Custom BNFF6 build... but, pretty sure on the specs for the neck!! Its going to be a 9 piece neck:
Ash / Black Veneer / Bubinga / Black Veneer/ Birds Eye Maple / Black Veneer / Bubinga / Black Veneer / Ash!....its a Neck through...visible on Body (front and Back)..as the body will NOT be a solid piece!!...(NON solid...wings only!!)

Crazy neck !
Are you going for walnut wings ?

Was down at the fbass shop today. Shot the breeze with Marcel and one of the wood workers named jeff. Very cool dudes.

I havent been to the shop in ages, and i definetly have to say the build quality these guys are putting out is top notch, in fact it raises the bar.

Im having some work done to my studio 5... She turns 15 years old real soon... Think of it as renewing my vows...

Stay tuned

I think the exposed core labella strings are the best.

You get a real "piano like" sound and are able to get the action real low accross the whole neck equally without buzz

I switched to d'addario round wound nickels for a while and some dean markleys but labellas are still the best IMO
