Club Fbass (thread 13)

It’s primarily the default build. I added a ramp, but otherwise it’s pretty stock. I’ve always thought the matte violin burst to be just a thing of classic beauty, so I couldn’t go any other way. I played both of my trades extensively over the past few days and they are incredible instruments, but I just reach over the C all the time. You know, kind of like the guy with the fiver that uses the B a thumb rest.

I totally hear you, that's why I let that BNF6 go as well, and all my Fs are now fivers. Keep us posted on the progress.

I recently traded for this absolutely beautiful BN6. George said this was the 153rd instrument completed 3/29/2005. She has a burled maple top, swamp ash body & bird’s eye maple fingerboard. IMHO,This is the best playing 6 string I’ve ever held! I’ve strung her with a set of NYXL’s & for the time being, the rest of my basses are resting in their cases.

I have been spending some quality time with my BN5 controls to really understand them.

I am not sure how they can get an authentic vintage/modern Precision sound, authentic Jazz tone, and a few other in between things out of the same instrument... but I'm glad they did.

The BN5 is almost staggeringly versatile. You can use the entire range of the tone controls and never get a bad sound.

A little trip down memory lane for FBass aficionados (aka all of us here ;-). These are my first two FBasses built around 1991. The hand written receipt features my special requests as noted by George himself. What a patient guy! The fretless was a high C neck through and the 6 string was a prelude to the newer BN6 - in trans forest green. They have found other homes since then ... for the record, the fretless was pure bliss and I should have kept it. The newer sky blue BN5, recently fitted with a pearloid guard, has a delicious playability and tones that are the result of 40 years of experience improving instruments that were already great! Now, if I could only get my hands on an AC5 ...

Today is a happy day! Melody (Mel for short), just came by Pony Express.
She's not a virgin, she's been loved by another, but to me she's gorgeous, has a sweet, sweet voice and I'm falling in love already.
Since she is "experienced", I was able to get her for less than any of my other Fbasses, but she can hold her head high as she takes a distinguished place along side her sisters; Thera, Fabiana, and Faith.
Excuse the cell phone pic, just took one fast so I can get back to playing.
@Tom7, can you please add Melody to my roster number whenever you get around to the next update (#300).

I was initially concerned about the apparent wear on the fretboard, so I sent pics to Marcel and asked about it. He told me the striping on the Ebony was just cosmetic, common, and nothing to worry about. He quoted me a price on having it sanded, steel wooled, re oiled to look like new, with fresh strings and a setup, that was so good it would be crazy not to take him up on it. I'm in no rush though, she feels and plays great. When I do get it done (probably first string change) I'll post before and after pics.
You're gonna love your new AC5, it's Fbass on another level!

As a guy who hasn’t played an F Bass, what should I expect out of a BN5?
For reference, I’ve had or have the following basses:
1. Dingwall Dbird and ABZ5
2. Spector - Euro 5LX, also a Forte SS
3. Nash PB63 and JB63
4. EBMM H
5. Warwick Thumb
6. Ric 4003


I’ve listened to a few demo videos but haven’t found one that really impressed me in terms of the review/demo sound quality. I think this is more the demos quality than the bass.
