Club Fbass (thread 13)

AC5 owners, what sorts of weight ranges do you see for that bass? I think it has a slightly larger body?

Thanks
B>

Slightly larger in comparison to which models?

I don’t have an AC5 but had a BN5 and BNF5 at the same time (sold the BNF) but as I recall, the BNF is the same basic body as the AC and it was about the same size as the BN given that the “cut away” is deeper but is compensated by the back curve being a more traditional arch.

Not sure if that helps you or not though. Of the 3 Fbass’s ive had (2 BN5 1 BNF5) they were all in the realm 9.5-10.25 lbs.

This is What my AC5
weighed in at prior to being shipped to me.
Thanks to @Jabba the bass

About to place an order on my first F Bass!

A couple questions for you all...

Can BNs get vintage and growly? I prefer the BN as I really dig the matching pickup covers and the new pickguard shape they’ve been using with some BNs recently.

Has anyone regretted not getting fret dots on a plain maple fingerboard?

Are exposed pole pieces an up charge?

A just for fun - I’m going for a coral pink finish over an ash body. Trans or solid finish?

Thanks all!

Vintage and growly is hard to clarify - maybe if you could point to a tone on a recording?

That being said, the preamp and pickups are wonderful and there is a ton of tones available by twisting the knobs...

I don't regret having dots on the fingerboard - I'm too fat to see them anyway. :)

Exposed pole pieces is ~ $350.

And trans finish for coral pink would be HOT!

Thanks for your replies guys! I guess i've been chasing that single coil jazz-esque tone after a couple years of only playing humbuckers in my mtd.

Do you guys know if the matching paint finish on pickup covers is standard on BN models too? I haven't really ever seen BNs without matching pickups (to the body finish) but just wanted to be sure.

You can create an account on the f-bass site and play around with the build-a-bass application to see exactly what stuff is standard.

You’ll get that tone and much more!

Yes, matching covers come standard on BN Basses.

I’m still toying with the idea of testing out an F Bass. Are most users sticking with the factory exposed core strings? Other than a set-up what other considerations are needed if switching to more common strings without the exposed core? I’m assuming there shouldn’t be any real problems with that.

I’ve been using Fbass strings on my BN5 for 15+ years. I’ve tried others, but, keep coming back. They have such a clear fundamental and just the right feel. Going to regular strings involves a little bridge tweaking, but, no big deal.

Just action/intonation required to switch.

I loved the tone of the F-bass strings, but couldn't get past the weird warbly noise (discussed elsewhere in this thread) that becomes prevalent above the 12th fret... (which I personally believe to be overtones caused by the difference in string mass between the normal and exposed parts of the string - the ratio of which increases as notes are fretted further up the neck).

That said, it doesn't seem to bother others... So not sure what the differentiating factors are (specific basses, ears, preamp settings, etc)

I love the FBass strings! My FBasses sound unique from my other basses.
