Club Fbass (thread 13)

Thanks, they really do great work at the shop.
WhenI 'm recording, I almost always grab the PJ first and use it in passive mode with the P pickup solo'ed as a starting point. Then I'll engage the pre amp and maybe dual in some J as needed. Other than that, if I want a Maple board sound, am looking for something specific, or 'just because', I'll use the others.

Man, it's hard to go wrong with a good P Bass tone. But... with those three super hot basses, I know it has to be a challenge at times. Seriously, all three are just wonderful, but the J/J is maybe my favorite bass I've ever seen and I know it sounds even better.

Hey juju, it's always good to hear from you. It's been too long brother!
I have you to thank for your sage advice, or for nastalgia's sake, I would have gotten a jazz bass by the ''other company' that starts with F.
I'm blessed to finally be at a point where any bass from my collection can make me smile for many reasons. Believe it or not sometimes i forget how great these Fbasses sound.
Recently I was going through a phase when i almost always reached for my Kenneth Lawrence. No matter the situation the tone was working for me. Then almost out of guilt I said to myself "I should play my Jazz". I was floored! The Fbass just knocked my socks off! Now I try to play each of my Fs at least once a week, even if it's just for a little while.
So thanks again. That JJ is a pleasure for me to play and to just look at and admire when I'm not playing it.
Fbass for life!!!

Apologies if this question has already been asked here:

Is there any sonic difference between a BN pickup with exposed pole pieces versus one without the exposed pole pieces?

Also, concerning the ones with exposes pole pieces, are the poles flush or recessed below the surface of the pickup?

I really like the appearance of exposed poles on a pickup, but hate to feel them when playing!

Many thanks!

I have a BN and a BNF. The BNF has exposed pole pieces. The two are vastly different in tone, but I don't think all of that can be attributed to the pups being exposed or not. I am sure someone has two more similar basses to compare and contrast for you. I will also say that if you call Marcel, he will absolutely break it down for you. Or, maybe more importantly, listen to what tone you are chasing and make good recommendations as to which will fit your needs. The exposed pole pieces on mine are reasonably flush and I do not feel them at all when I am playing. I do have other basses with raised pole pieces and I have to be careful when playing not to get over the pup as I don't like the feel when I am playing.

I should also add that both sound amazing to me and even though I wander occasionally, when I return to my F basses, I am always smiling. They are wonderful instruments.

From the latest copy of Bass Palyer magazine. The article on Tom Hamilton is interesting, but I knew you’d appreciate this...

Just got my first F Bass! It is absolutely the best bass I’ve had in my hands! Would love to have a club number!

Well folks... the day has come. I’m parting ways with my beloved BN6 and BNF6. I do love them and the decision has been difficult, but I’m resolved that this is the right thing to do. I’ve discovered that I’m just not a 6 string player. I’m a pocket bassist and I enjoy laying down the grove. In the past 3 years, I don’t think I’ve touched the C string on a gig.

Now for the good news... I’ve arranged a trade with Marcel and they will be traded for a AC5! I’ve wanted one of these since the day I saw it online. It’s going to be a bit of a wait, but I am very excited. Now, where did I put that bubble wrap!?

It is... you know, someone could get a deal right now if they wanted to pick it up instead of me shipping it.
I can't believe you're letting the BNF6 go, but I can totally understand why. Congrats on the new AC5,. I also have one on the way but I couldn't part with any of my builds, so my AC5 is a used one. The good news is the wait isn't nearly as long. Congrats on your decision. How did you spec out the AC?
