Club Fbass (thread 13)

It’s really quite simple, actually:

  1. Start with the proven combo of an ash body bass with a maple neck (fingerboard woods are optional).
  2. Add the best sounding, easiest to use preamp available.
  3. Add pickups that were made to work with that preamp.
  4. Put those things in a bass that is beautifully and ergonomically made. It helps if the designer was also a good bass player as well.
  5. Set up with the perfect strings and a great, standard low action.
There you have it!

How does F Bass get that perfectly grindy tone on their BN basses? I played a BN5 at a guitar show a year ago and I'm still thinking about that sizzle.

I just picked up this beauty!! More later... Cant stop playing! :bassist:

Sooo, about a day spend with my new VF6. All i can say is WOW. I know Fbasses are great but this one is somethig special! It plays really even and loud acoustically. With amp its like 60's jazz with extended strings and really MEATY tone! Today I was playing it and suddenly realized that EQ was flat and I was loving how it sounded so big and clear. B-string is huge and C-string isnt thin sounding at all. I have to do some kind of demo of this bass for you guys...

I’ve been wanting a BN5 for a long time but have started to take notice of this VF5 PJ. I mainly play a Fender Elite 5 with the TI Jazz Flats. I’m thinking of the BN5 or this VF5. I love the idea of a P and thought a PJ would be perfect for what I think I want the sound coming out of my fingers to sound like. I’ll probably put TI Jazz Flats on it too.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

BN5 and VF5-PJ are going to be different animals (of course depending on the woods!)... What kind of sound are you after? If you like using flatwounds I quess you like more warm/traditional tones? I would say that PJ with flatwoundsb (and alder+rosewood combo) would be very nice and versatile bass. P pickup alone goes straight to motown etc. both pickups together is close to jazz but more scooped mids (in my experience) and soloed J goes straight into jaco-town! :)

These are my favorite kinds of posts in this thread. Thanks for updating us!

Hi all,

Can someone tell me if the bridge pickup with passive tone rolled all off on a BN can cop that dark, wooly jazz bass-like sound or will it be still bright?

I've owned some active basses whose passive tone knobs did not roll off inthe same that a traditional passive tone does...

Hope that makes sense!
