The Dunlops are really just an unbelievable flat I think in every way. Tone, Tension, Feel, Versatility. So much so that it was really hard for me to even think of taking them off to search for a round! Now I'm completely torn on which ones I want to keep on it.

I've only had the Pure Blues on for a few days but to me so far they are are all of those things in a round wound and have a very similar tension to the Dunlop flats. Not floppy and definitely not cables. Right in the middle. That aspect also makes changing between the Dunlop Flats and Pure Blues a snap because there's really not any adjustment that has to be done on the bass. I think you'll dig em though I've not yet played the Nickel Lo-Riders. I've used Fat Beams and Sun Beams DR and feel the Pure Blues have a little something extra going on sonically and both of those strings I found to far to low on tension for my liking.

One of the biggest things I noticed was how well the Pure Blues responded to EQ. Every adjustment I made was noticeable and produced a really nice and usable sound. Whatever it is with these strings they line up perfectly with this bass and my Aguilar TH700 through a Bergantino NV212T.

Lmk if you try em. Would love to hear how you think the compare to the nickel lo riders since I haven't played them yet.

Funny about the Pure Blues and Moollon. I've tried a whole bunch of different strings on my JV. It came with Sunbeams and they're great strings, used them for years but at the time I got it I was using a slightly custom gauge D"Addario XLs so swapped them out. Then tried a couple of sets of NYXLs which I really like. Much more top end, almost like a stainless string. Most recent, was running a set of GHS Balanced Nickels. They were OK but TBH I hadn't been reaching for the bass as much recently and it just didn't seem right. Happen to have a set of DR Pure Blues so put those on it was like "oh yeah, now I remember why I love this bass so much!" Now it just has so much growl and yet a really broad tonal range. And the feel is perfect - just the right amount of tension, not to stiff, not too floppy.

I'm looking forward to checking out some different eq settings once we're all out gigging again

FWIW, I has the Nickel Lo-Riders on another bass for a while - think it was a SR5. To me they were very similar tone wise to the Sunbeams but a bit stiffer. Tension on the Pure Blues feels somewhere between and the LoRiders and the Sunbeams.

Agree with all of that. I don't think I've ever found such a perfect fit with rounds as I have with the Pure Blues on my P. Cool to hear that they sound great on a J as well. May have to try a set on my Sadowsky for fun. They certainly do respond incredibly to eq adjustments. Lot of versatility and usable sounds within these strings. And 100% the tension and feel of these strings is perfect. Right smack dab in the middle on tension and surprisingly soft on the feel. Dunlop Flats are still #1 by a slight margin but I didn't think I'd ever find a round for this bass that could challenge that top spot the way Pure Blues do. Really love the way they've settled in since I put them on and plan on keeping them their for quite awhile.

I definitely don't think Dunlop Flats lack in the mids. It's kind of a consensus that that's where they shine or have the most content. Were the strings new on that bass? I think one major difference about Dunlop Flats is that when they die the really die unlike some other flats that people may leave on for a year or more. And they don't die in a dull thump kind of way. They died in a way that I just wasn't able to get a good sound out of them no matter how much I twisted knobs around. I figured that out the hard way(expensive way). Had a gig coming up so panic ordered another set of Dunlops after trying a handful of others and hammered them for a couple days... and boom...It was back. I got almost 7 months out of my first set.

FWIW one of the things I do like about the Dunlop Flats is that while they have a very vintage grunt and thump to them they somehow still have some commonalities with rounds as well as a lighter tension. A lot more growl whereas other flats(more traditional flats) have heavy low end thump and then are very warm and even across the rest of the spectrum. Many don't want any round wound characteristics in their flat which I totally understand and in that regard I'd say Legends and definitely La Bellas will fit that bill better.

I have a P Classic on its way to me and I asked YJ to string it up with the Dunlop’s so I could give them another try, I thought it was worth it because he recommends the string.

100% I spent a lot of money on both flats and rounds thinking I'd find something better and in the end the only two strings that'll ever be on this bass again are the Dunlops and the Pure Blues. Taste is 100% subjective and for my tastes YJ got it right.

Kinda surprising since it’s been a mild winter and I don’t take it into cold weather, etc.

Does anyone think this is cause for concern? Doesn’t bother me if it’s just cosmetic, but if this will lead to functional issues I’ll get it addressed.

By the way I use that Dunlop 02 on it about once a year.

Thanks for the reply! They were new. Listening to a recording of them, it might just be that they're comparably full range so the added top makes the lows and low mids stand out a little less. They do sound a bit mid scooped to me, like Chromes or the Cobalt flats.

I've used pure lemon oil per Alembic's recommendation for ebony fingerboards for years and had no problems. I do it twice a year. Ebony is not an oily wood and needs rehydration.

This is the main reason I dislike ebony. It's not a hard fix. I'd probably mix some ebony sanding dust with either superglue, epoxy, or maybe wood glue and fill the cracks. This should stabilize the fingerboard in those areas and the repairs would likely be undetectable if done right.

Is it safe to use something like Howard's feed & wax on the ebony board on my P5? its looking pretty dry after a season in my suboptimally humidified basement studio.

Also, has anyone messed with tapewounds on their Moollon P? Thinking about trying some Labella or Daddario black tapes. I like the woody clunk of those strings, wondering if they'll offer a little more upper mid bite than the flats I have on it.

I wouldn't use furniture type stuff... they have waxes that can gunk up a fingerboard. I use the pure oil (peel extract) you can usually get at Whole Foods or other such places. Although who knows if you can get into stores right now depending on where you are.

I had a set of Labella black tapes on my Moollon J VI. Had them on Fender 57 RI Pbass before that. Keep wanting to like them but could just never get with them. Guess I’m not a tapewound guy.

I had he La Bella white tapes on a P5. I liked the tone! They were quite bright, you could get a round wound rasp from them but they had a touch of the earthiness of flats too. They felt a plastic-y which made the bass feel like a toy. I ended up taking them off because they were a bit too low tension for me.

Don’t believe so. Can only imagine the cost to a one man operation to retool for said tuners. Seeing as how YJ is all about pre-CBS and mostly the lollipops appeared afterwards and it’s a purely cosmetic thing my hunch is a big fat no.
