Club Moollon

A P Classic IV and TI's is a beautiful thing. It was right around this time last year that I was in the same boat waiting for mine to arrive. Haven't been able to put it down since I got it.

I really want to try one of those NordyMutes. I've been seeing them pop up in quite a few places lately. Maybe have to order one. Any Moollon users here tried one out?
I have a Nordymute for my Sadowsky and just ordered another one in 19mm for my eventual Moollon build as well as a Lakland hollowbody that I have. It's an awesome tool to have and gives you some playability options instead of just palm muting. I like to angle it a little to mute the G string a little bit more to have a little more of an even tone string to string.

Just a random question for the club: Do Moollon users prefer the p classic over the jazz? It seems to be a more popular choice over the models Moollon has to offer.

I think it has something to do with the fact that they are expensive and mimic vintage instruments. The mindset I hear most about vintage basses is people would want a vintage P bass (for studio playing etc) and I think that gets factored into why P basses are ordered more. But the moollon jazz basses are SWEET. Now I want one too...

Just creeping on this thread, but I’m really wanting to try some tapes out. There’s a good demo of tapes vs rounds vs flats that D’addario did on YouTube. I actually got a pair of tapes through an old job and should really give them a spin sometime.

anyone use tapewounds on their P bass?

I used em for a bit. They were fun for awhile but ultimately I went back to flats. I keep a set of tapes on hand for my Serek because they do create a unique sound and can be useful in certain situations. Just didn't have the versatility and overall sound that I wanted from my P.

The recommended Dunlops from YJ are killer on this bass. Also dig the Thomastik's as well the GHS Precision Flats that I just tested for something a little more old school than the Dunlops and TI's.

Just a quick news report in relation to the recent discussion about ordering from local dealers here in Seoul.

A few weeks ago got a complaint from our close friends who work as the domestic distributor of Moollon products regarding a recent local retail bass sale abroad, stemming from being an issue of availability "fairness", there being such limited stock and lengthy wait times for everyone, coupled with intended sales target (walk-in, try-and-buy customers), that it was requested that we agree to not allow local shops to make Moollon stock available to international destinations. It's a bit more complicated than that, but suffice to say the only way now to buy from local dealers would be to visit the shop and purchase (which I do fondly recall int'l customers inquiring me about, and proceeding with a shop purchase as such more than a half dozen times since 2008), if not buying via a local who makes the purchase in proxy.

As I was in the process of asking the Moollon gents this evening how a fellow forumite would go about contacting the above dealer, I was informed that the issue came up in discussion with our distributor about 2 weeks ago, and the mutual agreement was made then. I reckon some of us would pay all the more to have the ease of ordering a locally-purchased Moollon bass and have it shipped at the drop of a hat rather than waiting upwards of a year, but alas "big picture customer service and economics" seem to be the core point at play.

I was thinking about the cost, the quality, the fact that it takes a year ETC. I decided to buy after realizing that if these were mass produced they wouldn't be as good, and the wait is worth it for that level of detail put into them. These easily could be a higher cost when compared to vintage fenders. A 62 P bass goes for probably around 10K, so a semi-perfect recreation could go for 5k plus. Hell a fender custom shop is around 4k (I think).

Not to imply anything dark, but it seems once Yoong retires/stops making them himself it doesn't sound like theres gonna be someone else to continue. I may be wrong.

Just to clarify so I don’t misunderstand: Moollon’s policy now is to ask that Korean dealers not ship internationally?

I concur.

We need to keep YJ as healthy and making instruments for some time. ❤️
