Am I nuts? I think I can better justify the 3 with some more variety, not to mention not needing a non Sad P ever!

I added an alder/brz PJ 5 w/ full P body last January after 11 yrs using a Vint 5 JJ and 8 yrs w/ a 24/5 and I REALLY like it. The 24/5 is now gone because of that. It took me a few sessions to adjust to the feel but it was not a big deal, I wish I had taken the plunge to the PJ 5 sooner. My guess is that you are going to love it, congrats.

Could it be a P body with a PJ setup, mid switch!!! and the Will Lee neck profile????... Now, that's my dream bass right there!!!

I dont think the mid switch is avaikable outside the Will Lee. You can get the neck profile and 1.45 nut for $200, but no 22 fret.

On my board for my hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock tribute band, I use an EBS MultiComp. Small, simple, love it!

I am thinking about a JHS Lime Aid Compressor to try out for my other band though.

I tend to like compressors that add a touch of color to your tone. I founf the EBS added some punch and a touch of warmer, fatness if that makes sense.

I had the Aguilar, which is completely transparent for instance.

Most of my gigs are heavy rock, and for those I go with the gentle compression that comes along with mild overdrive, either from a tube or tube-emulating preamp (Ampeg SVP-Pro, SWR IOD, SansAmp RBI/RPM). However the MarkBass SD800 I got earlier this year (used as backup or with mini-rig) is super-clean, so I added my Rane DC-24 dual-band compressor to the rack (below). It's a great unit: I get the (gentle) compression I desire with amazing transparency, no noise or squish.

I believe the DC-24 is no longer in production, but based on my experience I think multi-band compression is the way to go.

I've got nothing to add other than the more I play my bass with the HC's in it, the more I can tell a difference.
Man, did it open this up.
I think with all the ash/maple brightness going on, combined with the SC's, to my ears it was too harsh.
The HC's, at least in this bass, really lets the whole ash/maple sweetness come through, but leaves the honky/harshness behind.

Right.

This is usually the decision point for most people... at least from a strictly tonal perspective (as opposed to functional, like noise cancellation)...

The most common things I've heard, which I generally agree with, is when you play it solo, the ash/maple/SC thing seems almost too harsh, but when you put it in a mix, that edge helps preserve a nice high end profile in the presence.

However, even that can be a bit much for some folks who crave a sweeter tone, and that being the case, the HC's should do very nicely.

I still have the HC's that came in NYC 5249 and I'm keeping them. I do currently still have the SC's installed, but it was really more of an experiment to see how the chambered body compared to the non chambered body of my older NYC. Some people are more bothered by the tone of the HC's, but not me. I do generally prefer the SC's, but it's not like by night/day.

Anyway, FWIW.

Yeah, it's not like it's a massive difference really.
I agree with you Vic how the SC's could retain that upper end. I've never had much of an issue in that dept. though. I've pushed through a pretty good "generic Jazz Bass" sound that has been my "goal". And I think given a quality Jazz, I have it pretty close at this point.

This is all in my little music room mind you. I've only had it at rehearsal and one gig with the HC's, and I was very happy.
I've had this combo before, so I kinda knew it was what I was gonna do to (the swap) be honest.
I would have done it when I got the bass, but wanted to just try the singles out for a while.

So, lemme see, got the NYC JJ5, Valenti J/MM5 and a couple of Jazz 4's.........PJ 4 or 5 next????? Or Modern 5???
