Here you will see someone who charges A LOT of money for nitro finishes even admit it does not really make a difference. And the downsides of the "care and feeding" of a nitro finish is definitely not worth any very minimal, if any, tone difference. IMO anyway. And you will notice he said here can her a subtle difference...not necessarily "better"
IMHO, nitro is not about the sound. It's about the way it looks, feels and ages. When brand new, it might not look that different but after a few years, it's character begins to show.
If you mean by "character" cracking, chipping, pealing, etc. You are absolutely right.
I guess it's just a personal thing. I am happy to know that my poly finish will look pretty much the same as it will 10 or 20 years from now.
I think you need "audiophile ears" 
to detect a tonal difference between finishes.
That said, I can see why someone would want a nitro finished body: the feel is different, and some like the "relic" look. I do, but it's easy enough for me to "mojo up" my poly-finished bodies.

Have heavy gauge Jamerson Labellas in the 5 string set on my PJ5, and am auditioning the above as a solution for 'bright modern sound with roundwounds'. It's not a Modern, but it just might work out. I had one of these in olympic white back when and loved it a lot more than my RV5. Can't wait for a second impression. Plus the blocks/morado AND LPB finish was just too much for me to pass up!!!

Is that guard mint or parchment? I can't quite make it out in that photo. I recently acquired a beautiful RV4 HPJ and have thought of putting a lighter guard on it - not sure if I should go with mint or white. Any suggestions? I'll post up some photos as soon as I take some.

What's the best poly Sadowsky bass for metal?
Probably the poly finish, as it could better withstand being repeatedly struck with a spiked bracelet from heavy downstroke picking, not to mention the blood and sweat it would come in contact with.
On the other hand, someone wanting a fast relic'ing job on their nitro-finish instrument could loan it to a thrash-metal bassist for a few weeks.
