So true....and so much is going to be based on the type of music that you play and the type of tone that fits. Yes you can play old Motown with a J-type bass but in so many ways it's just not the same.

Also you have to consider what ampage you are using. Running an SVT or a db359 compared to a Mesa M9/Shuttle is going to swing things in another direction, again.

I have been thinking that a JJ bass would be the Swiss Army knife. But then I got to spend some quality time with Bart's alder/BRW PJ4 and found something that I was missing. Consequently there is a very distinct possibility that a certain alder/BRW PJ5 might be coming my way. :bassist:

So question for you lightweight owners (well, bass being lightweight, not necessarily the owners). Do you find that sub-8lb basses tend to have some neck dive? I'm looking for a very light 4-banger but don't want to be fighting the headstock while its on a strap. My previous Sadowskys were all 5-strings.

I have a 7.6lb(non chambered) four banger and no neck dive at all! :)

My P4 (p/j) is 7.7lb with the standard large gear tuners & it's fine on a Sadowsky padded strap. As I've mentioned before, a lightweight P-bass will have less inclination to dive than a J-bass of the same weight while resting on your thigh w/o a strap because the bottom of the waist is further forward.

I'm almost certain I am using the same fingers to play any of the basses. I do have a strap for each that stays in the associated case. Maybe it's the strap? My Alder/Mor has a black leather strap and the Ash/Maple has a lighter tan leather.

I'm the first to admit that all of this variations on a theme. But, there's not doubt they are sound different. Even my old ears can figure that out.

My NYC 5-24 is just over 7 1/2 and it doesn't dive at all. I use a Levys 3" leather padded strap.

It would seem to me that a four would be less prone to dive than a five.

I have four and they are all 8 LBS or slightly under -- and they all balance fine w/ zero neck dive. I hope that helps.

I only have one sub-8 pound Sadowsky, and zero neck dive issues on it. However, I also have three other sub 8 pound basses, and no dive on them either, but only one of them is "kinda' J like" in body design, so take that into account.

Finally, after years of reading about them here, and seeing countless bass players on TV, Will Lee, Michael Rhodes, Ricky Minor, every music awards show etc. I too am a Sadowsky owner/beleiver. Wow, I've been playing bass since the mid 80's numerous basses, Fender 4&5's, Yamaha TRB 5, Lakland 55-94, I've always been skeptical of the Sadowsky's. After purchasing a custom classic fender 5 string jazz bass in 2006, (nice bass) I thought I was set. Then, after continuing to read and hear your rants about Sadowsky's and many opportunities to get a Sadowsky I acted on it, Big thanks to "bamabass" for posting and selling me my Sadowsky RV5 PJ 59 burst. OMG what a bass, love, love, love this bass, the neck profile/feel and the sound whoooooooa! Even when practicing with recorded music it just sounds and sits in the mix just right , and in a live setting it sounds even better. I can't say enough. Walking off the stage I'm grinning ear to ear because of the sound. I can see why people own more then one, that might be me eventually.
I now know why this is such a popular bass. It doesn't disappoint. I had to tell someone.:D :D

I bought that bass new. It went to Bama from me. It wasn't my "flavor" as dear Chef has said, but no doubt it is a very nice bass. Welcome to the Sadowsky experience. It's pretty cool.

Just thought I would drop by and say Hello to everyone. Ive been very busy lately and havent had time to keep up with the forum. Been working a lot of extra hours and changed the line up in my band. I have had my NYC since Thanksgiving and I still love it. Thats a compliment because after a couple of months I normally find things that I do not like about a Bass. For those of you that told me not to get rid of my M6. YOU WERE RIGHT. You guys know who you are. I wont say what I bought to replace it because in not that way. It was an amp that was much lighter. My band has two weekends off in July and I will be selling my amp and most likely grabbing another M6 Carbine off of TB. Hope everyone is doing good and enjoying the Sadowskys. I know you have seen this before but here it is anyway.
