I have a labral tear on the right shoulder and acromioclavicular joint ligament is gone on the left shoulder...
The doctor recommended surgery to repair the labral tear, but I never did it.

Thanks Gilles. I have flats on my PJ, but my J with single coils has Blue nickel rounds...I've been playing my J a lot lately after almost two years of playing the PJ almost exclusively... To the point that I might start carrying two basses to the gigs where the stage is big enough for a safe and confortable setup.

Don't do it. I know the recent TB phenom (I say that half tongue in cheek...) has been around Ash/Maple P's but I still say the sound of the NYC PJ5 is meant to be Alder/Brazilian. That wood combo and those pickup just work so well together.
Anyway, you didn't ask for it but that's my free advice (and you do get what you pay for.)

I think for me it has happend the other way round: I have played and loved ash/maple and ash/rosewood basses for years (Sadowsky, Lakland, Esh, Trace-Elliot/Status, Sandberg...)
Then I fell for the alder/brz P hype.
Two weeks ago I got a Lakland Darryl Jones (ash/rosewood) 5 string (a much cheaper bass) which had a universal JJ/PJ (non rev.) route.
I played both configurations, and I must confess (although it hurts in this case) that I prefer the sound of ash bodied basses.

Yeah, I'm just debating the up to 12 week recovery.
My right is hurting as well, but got the left checked out first as it hurts a lot more.
Lomo has that 5 pound BassLab for sale, but I know ZERO about them and to be honest, this Sadowsky I have now sounds freakin' amazing!!!!

The maple boards still have that percussive "thing" that happens upon striking the note, but now that I am using the TCE RH450 (which I love but seems to be going out of vogue) the "thing" is less annoying. The MB F1 seemed to exaggerate it. But, there is something else going on with that Ash/maple combo that makes it worth it. There is just more texture to the sound.
I really think it is the woods. The ash/maple Lakland I flirted with had the texture as well. And, the new RV4 is more smooth like the PJ was.
Mike, the rotator cuff is a general issue for us aging guys.
Don't know what stage/data you're looking at, but when I had issues a few years ago, the Ortho Doc wanted to cut; the PA told me " no, you should try the Nolan Ryan exercise." And, turned out the PA was completely on target.
Anyhow, good luck, and I'm sure Roger can build an axe to suit whatever case.
