Here is my new bass without the pickguard on top. :hyper:

The HC's (based on the Dimarzio Super J pickups, from what I understand) are big, wide, deep clean lows, a slight scoop in the low mids, and an almost hi fi top pure treble response. These pickups sound quite nice on the Alder/RW Sadowsky's to me, where the slight 'warming' impact of those woods combines very nicely with the more modern tone of the pickups. The treble response is very pure and sweet with that combination.

The single coils (based on the WONDERFUL Seymour Duncan antiquity II pickups) have hotter output, a MUCH more complex mid response, a touch tighter low end, and a more gritty, aggressive upper mid/lower treble grind. IMO these pickups sound particularly good in the ash/maple Sadowsky J's, which can get a bit clacky and sterile with the HC's IMO.

Well, I have 2 NYC alder/brazilian rosewood - one with HC and one with SC. I find the description above fairly acurate aboute the pickups IMO.

That said, I love my alder/rosewood with SC. More of a vintage and warmer vibe to it.

I'm actually thinking of swapping the HC's in my RV5 for single coils (even though it sounds very good the way it is). I really like those single coils a lot, and I am one who can never have too much mid response in my tone on a gig.

I had HCs in my MV5 when I got it, now I am using SCs.
I remember some comparison round here with audio clips. (I am not sure if it as an ash/maple bass, though).
In that comparison, the difference was minimal. But I felt the difference in my bass to be bigger...

In the IEMs the SCs just cut/integrate better. Even my guitar band mates felt the improvement. (Sorry, english is not my native language)

Just a suggestion...have you considered maybe a clear pickguard? That with the vintage control plate and the BEM board would look awesome IMO. Personally I'm not a fan of the pearloid pickguards, and (again IMO) it seems to clash with that gorgeous quilt top.

I reocrded those and can be found Invalid Link Removed.

The difference in the recordings, as Gillento says, is minimal, although I remember it being more apparent when playing with a band. In any case, both pickups are great.

I had a thorough listen to those clips before I purchased my sadowsky and I agree that the difference is indeed minimal. I'm not sure what woods were used in that particular bass but maybe the difference would be more pronounced on an ash maple bass.

I purchased an UV ash maple 5 string and opted for the single coils and Kjung's description of the single coils is pretty accurate. Particularly with a blend of treble boost and turning down the VTC you can cop a pretty accurate fenderish vintage tone too.

A friend of mine has a Sadowsky which is identical to mine with HC pickups. I'd like to AB them and make soundclips.

I took the 24F-5 in there this past Sunday and the sound guy was in love with it, and even a few of the other musicians were really commenting on how great it sounded to them even in the in-ears. It's hard to tell absolutely in the in-ears, but I do have coax plugs, so my in-ear tone is pretty good (IMHO, anyway, but I also rarely use much EQ on an amp).

Bottom line, it KILLED.

I figure most here have seen my previous posts, but here's one pic for any curious and not wanting to go search...

Cool! What kind of in-ears are you using with the aviom? I wish my church would go to in-ears.

Westone UM2's. Kinda' pricey, but they're coax and those ain't cheap anyway. Fantastic sound. I can hear my bass very very clearly and everything else as well. Very well "defined" sound. Plus, they come standard with the soft memory foam type Comply tips, which are well isolating and super comfy. I'll never need anything better.

Nailed it.
I just ordered my 2nd pair.
I had the tips custom molded for an even better fit!

Dual-driver design on these puppies isn't just hype... it's a very noticeable difference.

One of the "canals" that connects the earbud to the tips snapped off this past Sunday AM.

But I'm somewhat hard on them and they get used a LOT, so 2~ years for a set of earbuds isn't too bad...

The stock Sennheisers that came w/ our wireless IEM setup break about once per month. It's ridiculous.
