As I tend to like a bright, open Jazz tone, but then with just a little extra beef in the low mids added, the Big Singles really seem to deliver what I am after. I'd love to hear the single coils in the same bass, but comparing a relatively similar 5-string to this 4-banger, I preferred the Nordstrand pickups (for my personal preferences, of course).

+1 I can totally see that for the tone you go for, and they do seem to move the instrument away from a classic J tone, where the Seymours actually move the Sadowsky closer to a 'true' J type tone. Nice to have these options to fine tune the instrument to our personal tonal goals.

One other comment... since the Big Singles didn't particularly sound 'single coil' to me in that classic growly, grindy kind of 'rough' sense, I would think the Big Splits would be a better option. It's a shame to not be able to really solo the bridge pickup with the Big Singles, since they sound so much fatter than a standard J type pickup. The Big Splits seem to sound VERY similar to the Big Singles (I had the pleasure of playing a Nordy with the Big Splits at the Ohio Guitar Show last week), and they are not surprisingly totally quiet. They sound REALLY good in 'bridge pickup only' mode!
