Anyway, I'm going to try my MV4 first time in the studio this week. We go in for two days to get all the live-quartet stuff on tape (well, computer...) for our new CD. I expect no less then a killer bass tone!

I've seen lately that some of you guys have had your basses shipped in a new vintage style hardshell case (Access?).

Can you guys post some photos and do a review of this case? Maybe a link to the manufacture's website? I couldn't find anything about it on the net.

hey guys, just a quick question:

i am planning on replacing my MS5 HC pick up to SC. some of you here has SC, are they Sadowsky or Nordstand SC? does it work well with the original Sadowsky preamp? or do i have to make some modifications? and sound wise, is the SC better than HC?

I would be curious to hear about this one, as well. I will have a choice of what case to get with my new one. I was was probably going to get the Portabag but would like to hear about the vintage case as well.

BTW...I still don't have a number??? :)

I GREATLY prefer the Sadowsky single coils (from what I understand, a proprietary version of the wonderful Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups) with the ash/maple versions of the Sadowsky J. They add a grittier, more present upper mid tone, and move the treble tone from the very upper treble modern sound of the HC pickups to a more aggressive, grindy lower treble 'true J' sort of vibe.

I have HC's in my RV5, and I think the alder/RW work nice with the HC's, with the HC's providing a bit of sparkle and the alder/RW warming up the HC's a bit. I find the HC's in the ash/maple models a little bit ganky sounding to my ear... something just not right in the upper mids and treble to my ear... too harsh. IMO there.

I've heard a Sadowsky J (ash/maple) with the Nordstrand singles. That sounds nice also, but more warm in the lower mids and much more subdued in the upper mids/lower treble versus the Sadowsky models. I GREATLY prefer the Sadowsky singles (at least if you want an aggressive J tone).

Also, I find the Sadowsky HC's (I believe a proprietary version of the Dimarzio Ultra J pickups) as relatively noisy for HC pickups, and find the Sadowsky SC's to be way on the 'quiet side' of the continuum compared to other single coils. So, unless you are totally soloing one pickup, you won't really notice any difference in noise or hum IMO and IME.

Thanks...I traded it for one of my Smith's and I am VERY happy. Happy enough that I ordered a NYC 24 fret 5 string and picked up a Metro 24 fret 5 string to hold me over until the NYC is done.
Not that I was unhappy with the Smith, just looking for something different. Obviously, they fall on two separate ends of the spectrum.

Great and great, respectively. Also, you had it set up perfect (tho I expected that anyway :)).

I'm guessing you use nickels on it... it felt pretty nice and slickery when I noodled on it a little last Thursday. What was kind of amazing tho, is I'm pretty sure the strings, while not "worn out" were far from new or fresh... probably not having a ton of that roundwound ring/zing still happening, yet how great that bass still sounded in the mix despite that. Nowhere near dead or dull. VERY "alive" sounding. It's a big reason I took my Sadowsky (tho not a JJ5) to the Saturday gig, and was glad I did. :)

I've had the single coils installed by the the crew at sadowsky. They work very well with the original Sadowsky preamp (particularly with the VTC). I cannot speak for the HC pickups because I've only tried them very briefly on my friend's bass (identical to mine) but I've liked the single coils a lot.

I'm am curious also to hear about the vintage case. For myself I got the portabag and I'm very happy with it. It is neither flimsy nor as light as a soft case and it feels quite substantial.

Yeah, by the time you got to it those strings had four gigs on them and they were about fizzled out. I usually keep fresh strings on there at all times but since I was going to be sweating it out in a hot beer tent I figured that I could make 'em last another night!

Also, yes they are Martin (Darco) nickel round-wounds that I bought super cheap from stringthis.com. They sell them in bulk and with shipping it averages about $12 for a five string set. And these are the ablsolute freshest strings that I've ever bought. I've had players check out the bass and swear that I had it strung with DRs. I have opened brand new sets of Fodera strings that had dead strings and that really bums me out. :scowl:

I have to tell you, one of my buds, (bassman57) has a Vintage 5 (ash/maple) with the HC's, and that thing has tone to die for. It's huge actually! It has it all, lows, mids, and highs that are all balanced just right. The "B" has a throatiness to it that just kills. Honestly, it is one of the best sounding basses I've ever heard.

+1 In no way do the HC's sound 'bad' inherently with the ash/maple. However, when I finally heard that particular model with the single coils, it was a 'forget about it' revelation for me. The singles are so much warmer, punchier and have a more traditional 'J' style of upper mid rawness that really brings out the best in the MV's and MS's, of course IMO. The bass, of course, still keeps that 'Sadowsky tone signature' that comes through with all of Roger's J instruments. However, the singles just add a bit more character and, again, real 'J-ness' to the wonderful Sadowsky tone, versus the more modern, pure, wider HC tone.

Pure IMO... different flavors of good:bassist:
