Club Sadowsky!!!

My first Sadowsky arrived today - I'm posting the stock pic because my camera is having problems. Its a 2003 but still mint. The only difference is the PG has been replaced with tort.

BTW, Roger signed the back of the headstock on this one.

Guess I need to come up with a new sig now.

I've always had the tendency to run tone controls flat -- on everything -- and control tone with my hands. But, based on several postings here, I thought I'd try pushing both top and bottom a bit (on my NYC 5-24) and taking the edge off by backing off the VTC. I love it, to the point where I'm running both treble and bass boost stronger than I ever thought I would...the Sadowsky controls really do boost a lot, but I'm actually cranking them at maybe 20 and 15% respectively (treble and bass knob positions), which is a ton on this bass, but really digging the result. Of course I have to compensate by bringing overall gain down, otherwise I'd just blow out the speakers. I'm really surprised how much I love the big sound I get. A small beef: as others have mentioned here, I'm not sure I love the concentric tone controls: hard to adjust one without turning the other inadvertently, but not a big deal. The sound *is* a big deal.

I've been paying attention to full size bodies lately (GAS :rolleyes:) and it seems to me like the NYC full size bodies don't have the same size and shape than the UV70s bodies. Am I right? Maybe Rob or Roger can confirm this.

I'm pnly interested in 4 string models, but it looks to me like the 4 string UV70s are different to the 5 string bodies.

Sadowsky NYC alert. I was just talking to Jim over at the Atlanta bass gallery. He told me that he just got in a NYC Standard 5 on consigment. I think he said '59burst and I am assuming a quilt top. Not sure on the price but if anyone has been looking for one. Give them a call.

I am not affiliated with them at all, just passing along the info since these don't come along very often.

Still counting the days (ok, still months) until my new Sadowsky comes in... :(

So first practice with the 24-5 with VTC last night.

GREAT. I found that I either like it with the VTC full on or full off... and for some funkier slap stuff About 70 percent on. My "go-to" sound is the pickups set 60/40 neck/bridge, about 30-40 percent bass boost and about 20 treble, then VTC to taste. For a really brutal sound, I had VTC rolled all the way off, 40/60 neck/bridge, a little more bass, same treble...

My band mates loveeee my set up. Now I'm just going to go from 12s to 10s (probably getting a mesa 810 now that I'm getting a car big enough to carry it) and I'll be in tonal heaven!

OK, this got me curious. So, I have a Metro 24 fret 5, an NYC Standard 5.

The NYC actually has a bigger body than the Metro. A little bit wider at the butt and the lower horn is longer. Weight, they are pretty similar.

I then broke out my Lull. It is actually smaller than either one which was my assumption.

So, now it is as clear as mudd.

Ok, I was on the phone with Sadowsky, continuing to pester them about model information and the question came up, "when did you start using the thicker headstocks and graphite bars on the NYC necks?".

Lisa (who totally rocks for digging this up, BTW) found out that they officially started using the newer necks as early as 2002, but there was about a 2 year "phase in" period. So, probably very few in 2002, and by the end of 2004, probably all of them had the new necks. The easiest way to tell the difference is to measure the thickness of the headstock. If it's closer to 5/8", it's the newer style. If it's closer to 1/2", it's the older style.

I'm figuring this essentially makes the current Metro necks very close, if not identical, to the older NYC necks.

Just a quick FYI.

Hey Vic, thanks for the info.
I'm a little confused here though. My Metro headstock measures just a teak over 5/8 (correct me if I'm wrong as I'm used to the metric system, photo attached) which makes it as thick as the newer NYC neck style?!

If I am not mistaken the current Metro necks are the same as the current NYC necks except for the Graphite reinforcement. Therefore the width is identical on both. Hope that helps!

You are obviously right. Someone once told me the Metro headstocks are thinner than the NYC's, so I was just going on that. It's been a while since I've had one though.

With maple FB I usually prefer the look of the white (parchment) PG, tort on a RW FB. But Im sure yours will look very classy either way.
