Club Sadowsky!!!

Tough group! I'm caught in the middle.

I started looking because I find it easier to record with ash/maple than alder/ braz. Something about that PJ5 that cones out "boomy" in recordings. I am still trying to find the right settings on the bass and in the software to eliminate that.

Bluesy - Have you tried recording in passive mode? with just the P-pickup on? Your PJ is one of the most beautiful basses I've seen - don't trade it! Maybe Blair will weigh in with some of his techniques for getting an awesome P-bass tone.

Yes. Can only record Passive otherwise it's more "boomy"! I'm still trying to figure out what the heck is causing it to record that way....

By the way, I have finished recording another song with my Beautiful Red JJ4 and my Grosh PJ4...in 1 song!

I'll update my soundcloud later.

IMHO...

After having owned a beautiful alder/braz-rw NYC PJ5 and now owning an ash/maple Metro PJ5...

Part of the "thing" with the PJ config is the gap between the big phat booty of the P pickup and the biting tone of the J. Gives the overall mixed sound kind of a scooped modern sound. Makes it a sweet slapper and a nice bottom tone, but it's not gonna' slice a mix like a JJ config. Further, alder/rw is gonna' be less aggressive than ash/maple. More old-school/classic. Not a bad thing, but that's why I ended up with ash/maple as my PJ. I loved the modern tone, but needed a little more aggression to make it a bit more forward in the mix.

So...

What it all boils down to is mids.

My first suggestion is to favor the bridge pickup just a little bit. Not enough to lose the big bottom of the P, but enough to get some cut back. If that doesn't do it, or do enough of it, play around with carefully boosting somewhere between 600-800Hz in the EQ.

At the end of the day, as much as I loved my alder/brw PJ5 I just wasn't happy until I got my ash/maple back. I don't know if you're finding you're in the same boat or not, but FWIW.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: If recording in passive mode helps a lot, no harm in that, either. Most likely something "good" happening for you with pickup loading.

"LIKE"..thanks Vic. It does help. I'm not getting that old school thumpy clean tone that I want. That's why I recorded the last song with two different basses. I needed a "P" pickup, so I used the Grosh for the latter part of the song.

Another reason why I was thinking of ordering a good old fashioned P or PJ bass someday. But with ash/maple. Not the tradional alder/rosewood.

Hi

Hey all. Had a blast yesterday in NYC at the shop. Picked up a great Will Lee and spent some time checking out everything in stock like I promised. The pj bluesy likes is killer! Great color, fat P neck and tone. The 5 strings with the soap bars in j positions were surprisingly punchy and full of tone I love the one I bought but a close second was a Will Lee in Dakota red w matching headstock. Alder/Brazilian board. Killer bass. Also a couple nice vintage J's. One in black, one that looked like mine w braz board, and an awesome teal vintage w pear blocks.

I think I played them all so message me if you'd like a report on a specific bass

Rob

Thanks!

When you say boomy, is it clipping? Also what software are you using for recording? I may be able to help.

Certainly not clipping. PreSonus Studio One Pro. Sounds like something is over emphasizing the bass, it's not distinct. I'm recording passive. This bass is full of character. Amazing tone live but hard to control in recording.

No need to clutter the club thread up any further. I will have to figure this out on the weekend.

Ok i will leave it alone, just make sure to check your preferences in your software, Microphone, it happened to me and i had selected built in mic, versus software mic.

My current crop of Sadowskys.
I had traditional Circle K's on the modern... ack bad idea, horrid string to sting balance. I normally run DR LowRiders, but what with the sale on Blues I bought a wack of them, put a set on - much betta!
Chromes on the NYC, probably heresy but I dig it.
The bastardized RS5 (black badass V bridge) has blues and single coils - that is one fat bass, light too at just a hair over 9 lbs.

Looking around for a NYC 4 (or a great deal on a Metro) string if anyone has a line on one.
The blue one with matching headstock here on TB- the seller went MIA so dunno whats up with him....
TIA!
