I haven't been around here for a while... buddy bikeplate let me know maurillio was selling a set of big singles, which I promptly bought - thanks maurillio!

I ordered my Sadowsky alder/ebony 5 string fretless with Fat Stacks. They were ok, but they just didn't have the sizzling "fender on steroids" (overused but accurate term) the BS's do, even in single coil mode.

The Big Singles are now in the fretless and it has totally changed the bass. I'm really happy with it now.
I LOVE Big Singles... could you guess? :p

Newbie questions alert:

Do the soapbar pickups in the M series share the same guts as the HC pickups in the V series, just different packaging?

What should I expect as to difference in tone between the soapbar PU in the M5-24 and say, an equivalent V 24?

With the Pups in the M series further back towards the bridge, I would think the tone would be more focused and less round (like favoring the bridge PU in any jazz bass).

Anything more than that?

Finally, if you end up soloing the front (towards neck) pickup in the M, does it sound at all like a P-bass? because the pup is in close proximity to the P sweet spot.

No, the soapbar pickups are a completely different sounding / design then single coils. (two rows of magnets in each soapbar)

A bit more hi-fi sounding. Doesn't have that vintage Jazz tone.

Yup, pretty much (compared to standard J position). More bite / focus.

Eh, what one's "P-Bass tone" is completely different. It may sound P-ish... but some P-Purist will say now.

I highly recommend you get one in your hands and play one. Thats the best way to get all your questions answered.

As a kid who came up playing P's, went thru a G&L phase, and is now a J guy, I will say this about the Modern:
it's neither.
The one I had was an exceptional bass, and great at what it did, which is quite it's own thing, and not at all my flavor.
I highly recommend trying one, it's a unique thing, and if it's a thing that suits you, there's not too much else out there like it.

As a point of reference, I had an MTD535 for a few minutes, that, of all the things I've had, was most similar to the M5-24 thing.

I personally wouldn't draw that comparison, because while they're both very "modern sounding", they're both so very different due in large to pickup design and location as well as preamp voicing. The MTD is much more scooped and wide sounding (without EQ) whereas the M5-24 is MUCH more burpy overall due to both pickups being generally towards the bridge. I'd compare it more to something like a Smith or Cirrus, but it's even pretty different from those.

The "modern" I had was an amazing instrument. I could slice mixes like a ginsu blade at much less amp volume than other basses, BUT, ultimately I missed the bigger rounder low end you can pretty much only get if the neck pickup is a bit more towards the neck. Boosting the bass EQ didn't really at least get me personally there.

In any case, definitely worth checking out just to see what the deal is if a biting aggressive tone is what you're after.

I second that emotion. Just played first gig with dancarlo's old MV5, all I can say is damn.....
