Kinda what attracted me in the first place, I appreciate unique instruments. That's why im looking or a used one, so if it just doesn't work for me, I won't lose too much in the translation.

Playing my cards right, I'll have two, one more coventional, one more modern, by this time next week.

I just picked this up from a great TBer. Can any of you knowledgable chaps provide more info?

I've never seen a modern style 4 stringer (or 5) with a PJ setup. Oh yeah, it's 7.5 lbs. Played it for a gig last weekend. I can die happy now.

It doesn't get played near enough, but that is a killer bass and the ash/maple/BS in standard position just rocks.

Rob answered already, but yes it is. It had standard single coils in it first, then they tried the BSs in it.
They are a strange big single, I think Carey made them this way for Roger to try. The pickup poles are side by side like a regular J instead of offset like a normal BS. They are pretty wide, wider than they need to be for the bass.

I almost sold it a couple of times, then I would take it on a gig or session... and all thoughts of selling would disappear.
It weighs 7.5 lbs and it screams.

Jazz Bass players, how many of you boost the treble control 75% and back down on the vintage tone control almost 85% (attenuating) in order the get all those high mids to cut like a machete when needed?

I never tried it on my previous Sads just wondering.

agreed it seems to bump a wide swath of upper mids from 800 to 2khz and then a steep drop off. very cool tool for a grindy rock tone with the neck pickup favored slightly. fat!

Agreed 100+ and it's the only reason I don't own a 535 anymore. Played it for years and finally realized (for me) most styles of music in a variety band setting, a Fender inspired instrument was the way to go for me.

I will add however, that during a brief period when the preamp in my 535 died, and while Mike was sending me a replacement (Mike and Rodger are in the same league/level of customer care, outstanding) that my 535 was wired PASSIVE. Whoa! Very nice rounded and more vintage tone without the pre-amp. The gain was a little lacking, but the tone was really really usable. I'd LOVE for a passive switch on that bass, but in the end the 35" scale was the deciding factor.

Perhaps the MTD 535 wasn't the best comparison, but, that and the G&L 2500 are the only basses I've owned that were remotely similar to the M5-24.
The G&L is even more dis-similar than the MTD!

Treble is centered at 4K... but it does sound like its bumping frequencies at 4K and below - not above... kinda like a reverse shelving. Whatever it is - it sounds great along with some VTC rolled back.

Yup, wider Q on those frequency centers. Really changes the character of the bass, if it's not over done, very useful.
