Club Sadowsky!!!

I've been thinking of re-recording the bass to one of the songs on my band's CD with my Standard 5 just to see the diff. My Lakland us a 55-02, but the sound will be essentially identical. I'm hoping to do it in January sometime, as that's when I transition from full time to 3.5 days a week at the magazine, and I might actually have some time.

The Lakland is more of a sonic chameleon than the Sadowsky is, so it would be hard to do anything *too* definitive, but I can probably get a good impression of the differences going.

Interesting story about my first Sadowsky purchase ( And I can proudly say I still have the bass ) and Chris Chaney and Mossisette . I first heard a Sadowsky on a cruse ship in 1998 with my wife in Mexico . We were walking around the ship during the day and heard the band practicing in one of the big rooms for that night's show . We sort of just found a open door and went in and listened , they were great , sort of a big band . The bass tone is what drew me in and when they took a break I went to the bass player and asked him what he was playing . He said a Sadowsky , do you play , I said yes and he handed me the bass and said try it out . I started noodling around with it and a couple of the guys in the band came in and we jammed a bit . That was so cool for me and I fell in love with that bass right then , it was a ash maple vintage 5 string. When I got home I sold a dirt bike I had right away to fund a new Sadowsky bass . I wanted to somehow play some more of them but living in California at the time I had no access to any of them . I called Roger and asked him if he knew of any way I could try some in cali . He said let me make a call and call you back . When he called back he said he knew a guy in Hollywood that would be open to me coming to his house and trying some . I think he said he had 10 of them at that time . He picked a few different ones and said come on by . He had a cool pad that was mostly a house studio , I played some basses and we talked allot about bass . I asked him who he played with and he said Morrisette . It was not Chris Chaney but his friend who he hooked up the touring gig with her . Anyway he was a cool guy ( cant remember his name ) and as soon as I got home I ordered my bass , a 5 string ash maple standard 5 carmel burst quilted top 8 LBS beauty , she is a 1999 and is still as sweet as when I got her . Like I said I still have that bass and one of his Ultra vintage P basses , next one day will be a 4 string jazz . Anyway I think this is a cool story and a bit of truth about how cool of a guy Roger is , thanks Mr. Sadowsky

Those are two basses I think every bass player should own at some point in their life. There's no telling which will be better with you band, until you try them. Sound clips in a vacuum, I bet 80% of the time you prefer the 55-94. With a band 80% of the time you'll prefer the sadowsky. They also work best with different amps.

I've had a few 55-94's over the years and I'll say that the later versions with the LH-3 pickups and pre-amp IMO crush the Barts.
With the MM pickup in single coil mode it really captures a "jazz" sound with the front pickup.
If Lakland would have had theae pickups when they first came out I think they would have been far more successful.

I actually disagree having spent a lot of time with both in the same bass. The Bart's just need some scoopy EQ applied and they come to life. And with the front coil of the mm blended with the neck on the Bart's sounds awesome, on the LH not so much.

You guys are crackin' me up. :)

I did think of all that, tho, but then I realized it looks cooler when you have some contrast and can see stuff, so I gave up on the "stealth" thing. It currently wears a chrome plate (tho still black dome knobs) and a black/red tort guard. I like it a lot better that way:
