Thanks. Another question (for anyone) re my thoughts for a PJ. Has anyone tried an alder/maple combo? I know Roger recommends ash with maple and that's the only config I've ever seen on the website. I'm leaning toward maple, but I'm much more an alder fan.

The 2005 black/maple NYC P5 in my avatar is alder/maple. I think it's still my favorite bass (possibly tied with an alder/maple bass of another brand). I also own an NYC P5 in alder/Brazilian -- lovely sounding bass (which I usually keep strung with flats/tapes), but I prefer alder/maple.

Also, for a few months I owned an ash/maple NYC PJ5. Nice bass, but it didn't tickle my ears as much as alder/maple so I sold it. Same was true for an ash/maple Fender 57 RI, and ash/rosewood Lull P5 I had owned previously. Given that I've had consistent good luck with alder and not-so-good luck with ash, I've been sticking with alder. By that same token, if your ears have been consistently pleased by alder/maple, it probably makes sense for you to stick with it as well.

I've had similar experiences with ash/maple. Come to think of it, I *have* tried an alder/maple combo in my Carvin LB70, which is one of my favorite basses currently. So yeah, I'm thinking about a custom order and I think that's the way I'll go. Thanks

That's a really nice bass, but lately I've been gravitating more to simpler tastes. There is a four string P Bass on the site in Oly White, maple neck and plain pick guard that has my attention...

what does a PJ sound like? I guess I understand that if
you turn down the J pickup, then you have an instant
P-bass sound. But what do they sound like together?

Well, after four sets of pickups in my ash bodied NYC5, my custom Aeros arrived and the slap and finger style tone is great. The bass is incredibly even and very detailed. The bridge pup has a great jacoesque tone, but I had to go down to .022uf on the vtc.

The pole piece locations mainly. My bass has been changed to 18mm so I measured the locations so the pole pieces are centered on the exact location of the strings at the neck and bridge pup. I'm not sure about the windings although I did discuss the tone I wanted, which was nailed.
