I have the portabag and I've also had the semi hard case that comes with Metros. The Portabag is made of a tougher material and more durable than the semi. It has way more protection than any other bag I've had. I love mine.

In the latest versions of both I prefer the HCs. They are a little shy down low but that just gives you room to add some of that ever-tasty sadowsky boost. The new singles are very high mid grindy and slightly dark, if that sounds good then get those ...
To me they are different animals, each has their place and I love both equally.
Just took delivery of #8282 Metroline. Excellent bass and plays well with Mesa. My Fender Jazz will be sitting a lot more. I will look into adding a tort guard but looks like Sadowsky is out of stock of a lot of the Merto guards. This came my way pre owned but it looks like it was never played. She weighs in at 8 lbs. 9 oz.

Thanks for the info concerning the hard case and portabag. I ordered a hard case with mine (don't really need the portability of the bag) and started to second guess the decision.
Here's what my RV4-WL looks in a Hiscox EBS-STD.
Not sure what the size difference though between my RV4-WL and your MV5, but it'll give you a better idea if you decide to go this route.
I think the shop recently changed this no? I'm pretty sure I saw a post recently of a NBD that was similiar to the case they show in the shop website.

+1 for the portabag. I love the dual Mono as well. My least favorite would have to be the hybrid case, but it is still a significant upgrade to a standard gig bag.

Tell me more about what you do and don't like about the hybrid/zero gravity case vs the porta-bag. I'm getting a portabag in a few days with my NYC and figured I would keep the hybrid and sell the portabag with my Metro, but it appears a lot of folks like the PB. Thanks.Btw, I'm a case junkie

I like teardrop hard shell cases, as long as they don't weigh to much.
The Reverend USA basses came with teardrop hard cases similar to that. They were light, sturdy, and I liked them.

first off i don't believe the hybrid/zero gravity case is being offered at the shop anymore especially with new Metro purchases.
looking at the site it lists this:
Case Included
- NYC models include your choice of our custom PortaBag or hardshell case.
- Metro basses ship with a gig bag.
as far as differences between the the hybrid and PB. the PB has the straps and handle so it's easier for transport. the handle on the PB is better constructed and feels like it has more mass too it. The PB also seems to secure the bass better all around. There is also more padding especially towards the bottom of the bass when your standing it vertically.

The hybrid does a pretty good job, but "giving it a little shake" to test if its secure, there is a bit of movement. To me at least, i also feels there's more usable storage on the PB as well, compared to the hybrid.

Is the hybrid case the rectangular Sadowsky case in the middle? Regardless, that "semi-hard" case is what I got with my first Sadowsky -- "Blackie", my 2005 P5. Blackie has been my #1 bass since I got it, and has the wear to show for it. The case accumulated wear, too... it held up well considering, but finally started falling apart at the seams after 6-7 years of frequent use. So, I tossed that case and Blackie now resides in a Portabag.
While we're on the subject, other "gig cases" I own are:
- Mono M80 -- seems rugged, but less so than the Portabag
- Protec Contego -- fantastic value (grabbed one for less than $100), but seemingly not as rugged as M80 or Portabag
- Reunion Blues Continental -- the most attractive, possibly the most rugged, but limited storage space compared to the Portabag
- GigBlade for bass -- unusual to say the least, designed to be flat. I no longer use it: not enough storage space, unimpressive protection factor
Very helpful; thanks for the tip. I bought my metro in the shop this December and they had a ZG there and asked if I wanted it. Liked how it looked and worked, so I took it, but didn't examine the PB's. Look forward to getting it this weekend.
Speaking of which, has anyone done a matching headstock refin with Pat? If so, does the Sadowsky logo and serial number get replaced back into play post-refin? If anyone has done it, pics please!÷

Agreed. I really don't see one as a substitute for the other and I can easily see why lovers of one would not be lovers of the other.
