This crosses my mind on every out of town gig I play. I haven't had any problems yet (knock on figured top wood); I kinda figure that to the uninformed the fancy tops may attract attention at first but the lack of "Fender" on the headstock may cause some gear thieves to assume that it's less valuable and worthwhile to fence over the guy that had a standard Fender bass.
It also helps that I'm 100% sober at every gig, am a bald, 6ft, 260 lb, bearded and tattoo'ed guy who routinely gets mistaken for a bouncer at every single bar I play.
