I've owned a number of PJs, starting with some hot-rod mods I did back in the late 70's, up to a 2010 Sadowsky. For me the biggest difference between PJ and JJ -- with both pickups on -- is on the D and G strings. With PJ, the E and A are Jazz-like, but the D and G are snappier... or thinner, depending on your POV. With reverse PJ, the difference is in the E and A strings: they are either growlier, or less thumpy, than JJ... but the D and G are more similar to JJ.

IMO, IME, and all that.

This makes perfect sense as the A & E coil is in the normal location of a neck position J pickup.

No, I was comparing PJ to JJ with both pickups on. I'd never diss a P-bass, I'm a P-only guy!

Lately I've been favoring my PJ5 over my SC equipped Metro JJ. Once I stopped "trying to make it sound like a J-bass" and realized it is it's own animal I've found it to be extremely versatile. I would say it retains the "Sadowsky tone" and sounds great IMO. Might not be for everyone, but I'm digging it.

I've started a dialogue with Pat, who is a stellar cat, to see what else we might be able to do with that hold down. The original may not fit any more. Didn't see that one coming, but probably should have.

I think the PJ setup on the Sadowsky is great. My NYC PJ worked out great for me as the P pickup gave me a little fatter sound for what I was using it for primarily. I wanted a P sound, but with more versatility. Nails that. Maybe that is just me as a Spector player for so long that I just naturally gravitate towards to PJ setup.

I had a few leading up to my custom build, so I kind of reached the conclusion that the alder + PJ would be right for me. That being said, my alder J was a great sounding bass as well, and my ash/maple Will Lee really cut through a dense, loud band far better than any other P or J bass I've ever played (loud Marshall half stacks on each side the stage and a loud drummer). It really comes down to what you are looking for.

I don't think I ever got a number. I don't know how to post pics, but it's 6113 (pictured here: I finally got a Sadowsky!). I just got an MV4 last week that I also purchased here, SOLD - Sadowsky Metro MV4-'59 Burst but have yet to gig with.

I emailed with Roger after I picked up 6113 to get a little advice on a few things, and he couldn't have been more gracious and gentlemanly. I'm sold for life. Lightweight, beautiful tonal range, and practically artwork to look at.

May I get a number now?

This is what I'm going for. I ordered an alder/rosewood PJ4. I think it'll be perfect. I have (and have had) other Super-J's, but I often miss the P tone.

I got to thinking, though, that if I pony up for a Sadowsky, it may be best to go for the classic "sits perfect in a mix Sadowsky" which I'd argue is a JJ. Why mess with it? Lol

That said, I'm sticking with the PJ.

PJ setup works perfectly for me. Unlike a couple Fender PJ's I've had, the P on this guy is a very convincing P. I opted for 70s jazz spacing at the bridge for some light jazz songs. Blend at 60% towards the P, VTC rolled off about 25% with a tiny bit of treble and bass boost to taste is pure bliss.

It may have been said before but you know what? The Sadowsky shop makes a damn fine instrument.

I'd like to hear a PJ that has the P pickup with the new dual coil pickup that allows you to have 60's rear J pickup sound, a 70's rear J pickup sound or a combination which I imagine would be real thick!

I'll have my WL with a P/super J set up in few weeks!! Also have my satin series is with pat Wilkins getting a P route put in!

Traded my ash/maple 24JJ for this late model PJ5 alder/braz. Great bass, still getting to know it, but so far I really like it a lot better than an older NYC PJ5 I had. The nordstrand pickups are awesome.

In terms of the PJ slap sound, using the EQ closes the gap with a JJ somewhat. Sounds great on this bass!

Yeah, I'd be interested in a PJ's ability to get something like the classic JJ slap tone.

PJ5 getting slapped. Worthy of mentioning, that recording is a zoom h2 sitting on the mix console at a festival. I know of no other piece of wood that can shove that kind of clarity through a wall of EAW subs. certainly non of any I've ever run across.

Meanwhile, back on the JJ side of things, I took my J24 out on its second gig last night:

Pure heaven. This was your standard Blues/Jazz/R&B gig, and the bass was simply stellar throughout.

I know there are little things you might expect from a top tier custom job; but, I just discovered today that my Hercules stand works great with this bass. I've been dragging around those grappling hook OnStage deals, because all my other J basses rest on the detuner in the hangers. Not sure whether Roger&Co changed the headstock layout or the actual detuner to address this problem; but I sure appreciate little things like that nonetheless.

You had me thinking "is he reading my mind on MY build #3??" until I saw you were going PJ, and the color. Whew.

Neither #2 nor #3 started yet, but fully formed in my mind (except for the Super J decision on the PJ). Just need to scare up the dinero.
