I'm interested to know how you came to settle on Delano pups versus the alternatives - some obvious, others less so.
I've actually posted that elsewhere; but, here is a synopsis. Basically, it was kind of accidental.
- I had put together a Shoreline Gold '97 Fender J Deluxe with a Sadowsky Onboard as a cheater Fender for auditions (with the Fender inclined acts) about 4 years ago. I wanted to replace the Suhr single slugs with something more potent, and found and bought the actual set of Delano JMVC4's that are in this bass, somewhat on a whim. (Footnote: I did end up installing a second set of the Delano's in the gold Fender; but, I just traded that Fender + cash for an RV5-WL. The TB'er who acquired that Fender left the Delano's in it. FWIW)
- For reasons I don't recall, I ended up installing that initial set of JMVC4's in the RV4 I was gigging at the time. The next day I took the bass to Big Band rehearsal, at which the BL halted the entire 25 piece band during the first tune, mid tune, and asked me what the heck I had done to make the bass sound so amazing. I had been gigging the RV4 with HC's with them already for almost a year. Needless to say, that set of pickups stayed in the RV4, and went to the shop when that RV4 was sold to partially fund this NYC build. The shop retained those pickups for me, and they are in this bass.
Meanwhile, I have been using Seymour Duncan SJB2's, which I had identified a number of years (decades) ago, in my passive Fender J's. I like them a lot. I'm not sure whether the Sadowsky SD's are similar or not; but, I do have experience with the Sadowsky SD SC's, which I gigged for a couple years in an RV5. I have the SJB2's in my Fender parts bass, which I recently converted to a cheater bass with the addition of a Sadowsky preamp. That bass sounds fine. But, I have a set of JMVC4's on the way that are going in that cheater bass. Oh, I also have a set of JMVC5's that are going in the RV5-WL when I get that bass back from Pat Wilkins. Basically, I like the combination of the Delano JMVC pickups with the Sadowsky preamp. If you couldn't tell.
