Did you pick the wood for the look or the sound? If the latter, what do those woods do for the sound?
You can get diamond or in-line on any Modern or non-vintage J...I think. I was given the choice on my 21-fret J.
The myrtle top was chosen specifically for the design, I just thought the grain looked beautiful and the top wood doesn't have much effect on the sound. The rest of the woods were chosen with sound in mind. I warn you though..you can fall down a rabbit hole researching tone woods.
I was looking for a bass with a tight punchy low-end and some warmth to it. Also looking for that "90%" bass to compliment/contrast my current go to (a 62-reissue pbass with flats).
Peter Amos at the shop was a HUGE help, can't overstate that enough. I must've spent three solid hours in the demo room a/b-ing basses that may have been identical except for say one had an ebony fingerboard and the other had rosewood, or one had the soapbars in modern placement vs jbass placement.

I'm pretty excited: Just got a used, black/maple Metro MS4 at a bargain price. It has a few body dings, but what a sweet bass! Low action, fast neck, tone(s) to die for. Can't wait to try it with the band. It's a 2008.
Thanks for the info! I have a 24 fret satin series, and I've been pondering a fretless build, and I'm always curious about what affect the various woods have on things.
One of the first gigs with my new to me 2006 Sadowsky Standard 5 NYC. Strings Sadowsky Black Label nickels, HC pups, GK MB500, Genz Benz Neox 212. The bass has excellent playability, very low action, no buzzing. Compared to Metro 5 I had before it has slightly flatter front-to-back neck profile. Very nice. Sorry for not best sound quality.
had an impromptu gig today, sitting in with a friend who plays 9-string guitar. Took the Satin Dlx 5-21, and I'm making friends with the whole ash/maple/JJ thing. We did Caravan, and I have a slap pattern that I do over the A section - sounded perfect. I'm finding that a bit of upper mid eq with the Bergantino Forte helps with a bit of punch that I'd normally get from a P.

I was thinking that at first, but I haven't particularly bonded with that in a JJ setting in the past. It might be that the JJ tonality works best for me w/maple fingerboard (I think that is the main ingredient - body less so, particularly if it is chambered). For most of my basses I prefer ebony, and maple is a lot closer to that than rosewood.
Local shop has a satin deluxe 4 I'll go and try. I do vastly prefer the satin finish to gloss - gloss always ends up feeling sticky to me, particularly in outdoor gigs.

Have to admit I keep going back and forth between ash/maple vintage tint and alder/rw in sunburst. Need to figure that out in the next day or two so I can break it in at some weekend gigs.

Yeah - I prefer the black pick guard with the natural. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the top-to-body transition. It is hidden with the sunburst finish, and on other basses I've got with a top there is a thin contrasting layer that sets off the change. Likely would get used to it though...
Agree on the feel - I find the combo of the satin nitro on the neck and satin on the body makes for a fast/comfortable bass.

Although the Japanese dealers have begun to promote them, there are currently no instruments available and we are still crunching the numbers to determine what our costs will be to export them from Japan and supply our dealers. The Japanese dealers will only be selling in Japan and not shipping the MetroExpress outside of Japan.
Please give us a couple of weeks to complete this process so I can make a full and complete press release. The MetroExpress Line will be unveiled at NAMM in January.
