I use this to take the gloss off my necks. This was suggested by Roger. Just a little rub on the back and the necks get that nice unfinished feel.
My jazz always active. Been having fun with my PJ in passive. Definately works nicely doing 60's soul.
Have to get a nice Black Bridge to go with the Black Satin.... Looks great
Sadowsky preamp is ALWAYS ON, unless batteries died unexpectedly (and Roger has a solution for that too, see Batt-o-meter).
The back of the neck on Sadowsky basses will polish over time (over many hours) to a glossy finish. Some players like that.
I have always loved the oil and wax finish on the back of Stingrays, so when my two Satin Sadowsky basses polished, I refinished the back of neck with TruOil and Gunstock Wax. I love the results, especially in summer humidity (less left thumb drag).
Regarding active/passive... I mostly play passive.
I love my Sadowsky Satins! Best basses ever.

I sold my Metro PJ5 to local guy today that had a Spalted Maple fretless Modern 5. It was my first experience with a fretless Sadowsky.
It was sublime. That's about all I can really say.
It might have been an older one, the pickups were shaped more like EMG's and not the P2 size that is currently used. The bass just sang. I'm not a fretless player - at all - but something about favoring that rear pickup on his Modern 5 with a little chorus and delay was one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Especially when played by someone who can play a fretless (i.e NOT me). Brand new G.A.S. pains. Yay.

I am borderline ready to sand down the back of the neck on my NYC but something about taking wet and dry to it goes against my grain, I'll have to play it until I can't stand the thumb drag anymore.

Full neck pickup, maybe roll off a bit with the VTC. EQ to taste. Compare with passive mode.
Or...cheat a bit toward the neck pup from 50/50, roll on a bit of the treble and bass EQ, then go heavy-ish on the VTC. (Boosting the treble EQ and then rolling off on the VTC is a special sauce that plumps the mids. Try it and see if you like it.)
