whoever said it's less "satin" and more "Velvet" is right... the candy apple red satin actually looks (to me) like a frosted Christmas ornament :-) ... it sort of... glows? To me they look way more classy than a normal gloss finish. Finger smudges are really non-existent, haven't gigged it yet, so no word on stage rash or sweat.

Now that I have my first Sadowsky, I understand the magic. They are brilliant/magnificent basses with such a wide range of versatility that offer world-class construction and sensational playability. Hence this comment:

My "next" Sadowsky

..... will likely be a Satin NYC 5 String JJ config. Probably Alder / Morado.

It's a finish that is also way easier to photograph. You don't get as many reflections and intense light and dark spots.

I had reggae rehearsal with the new Modern tonight and I am in love!! So light but sounds huge. This bass is all I hoped for.

I am having one issue though, and its kind of a problem - the C# on the A string (4th fret) just has no thump at all. You don't really notice at bedroom levels - but a band volume - it just dies. The C and the D are clear as a bell and huge. The C# not so much. Could this be an issue with the flatwound string? I put flats on it as soon as it arrived and have had no other issues. I'm hoping its the string because this is in the money zone. Not a good place for a dead note.


EDIT: As a test, I did move the cab around the room in case it was a weird reflection or some funky frequency thing but it was the same wherever the cab was placed.

I was under the impression that the NYC Satins used the NYC custom pickups. Then when my Satin 5 exhibited lighting interference and induced hum, Roger offered to upgrade me to full NYC hum bucking JJ picks for a very reasonable upgrade change. The pickup route depth had to be increased, too. That solved the induced hum issue. Then I think I read that the new Satins (after 2018?) now include these full NYC pickups, standard. Clarification from those more knowledgable here would be helpful. I'm not a pickup expert.

@gustobassman Whenever I change to a less or increased tension string, I make sure my intonation has not changed. I would check that and perhaps a tweak here and there will solve your issue.

Sadowsky switched out to a stacked hum cancelling pickup in Sept 2018. This was a change from a split style which, IMHO, is far inferior to the stacked design, which does require a deeper pickup route. The split is actually noisier, especially for a 5 string pickup, because the two halves of the split aren't even due to the odd number of strings. The A, D, and G strings have one coil under them and the B and E strings have another. To truly cancel hum the winds and output of the coil should be exactly the same which really can't happen in a split style 5 string pickup. Plus the split coil in my experience causes a mid scoop within each pickup. The new stacked pickups Sadowsky uses sound fantastic.
