It doesn't matter what the listener hears! All that matters is what the player hears and feels and every fingerboard wood provides it's own unique feedback to the player.

It's on my Sadowsky J4 and J5 and also a Sire V9 I have.
I'm usually an alder/rosewood type but I love ebony.

Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Ebony lies between rosewoods and maple regarding brightness...but it has the most immediate attack of all the fingerboard woods. Strong fundamentals, immediate full note with minimal bloom. Very punchy.

Vic covered it well: Sadowsky and Fodera have different goals. I've owned a wide variety of boutiques, but eventually realized that I wanted Fender-style appearance and comfort along with a modern take on the Fender tone -- so, Sadowsky is perfect for me. Fodera also makes great instruments, but most are modern across the board -- not my thing, but there are other folks who prefer it.

After trying a Warwick Streamer, I bought a Fodera Monarch Standard around 2004. Probably the most beautiful bass I've seen as I've opened the case. The neck seemed 'alive' and the notes popped out. I experimented with the action and got it ridiculously low, especially with extra light Wooten strings. Almost slapped by itself (and I don't slap). A very lovely bass. Just wasn't me tho'. Someone called it 'hi-fi'.

I'm old-school and owned a '66 Jazz and '74 Precision before settling on a '77 Stingray, which I still have. Thought I'd give Sadowsky a go but being in Australia, I'd be purchasing sight unseen.
Fender'ish looking but a flatter neck and this preamp thing. A 'modern' take on a classic design. Through an Ampeg BA10 it sounded ok but the big thing for me is the way it comes alive in the mix. Cuts.
Still have Lisa's autograph on the 2006 bass and I have a J4 and J5 now.

Perhaps I could've simply 'liked' Vic's post instead of writing this . . .

That describes exactly why I love ebony fingerboards.

I got one never having played one. And it was bass which live EVERYONE heard how good it sounded. Punchy and sat perfect in the mix. It’s a Jazz Bass. But on steroids. I was able to get a nice burpy vintage tone and was able to dial in a fat punchy tone as well for rock music. Just an all around versatile bass.

I've looked at articles on bass woods etc. for decades and wish I'd had this 40 years ago. It's the best article I've seen and the illustrations are excellent. Perfect for bass players. Short too.
The author's modesty shines through. Save it for reference and it'll save you hunting through this site for it next year.

My new one will have an ebony board on it, but I'm not sure I'll get the mid circuit. I've just never really needed one before, so if it's difficult to jam it in the config, I'm probably gonna' leave it behind, and likely not miss it.

Renewing club membership. 'Scuse the totes and shelves, in the middle of packing for a house move. Marisol's looking forward to more room to stretch out. :D

That finish... makes me want to grab my swim trunks and dive in. Beautiful! Not normally a fan of gold hardware but it really fits this one. Very, very nice.
