Club Sadowsky!!!

Granted just about every guitarist I've worked with had never heard of them before. Very sad.

In November 2018, I had the opportunity to drop by the Sadowsky shop. I was very excited and tested a few basses I was interested in. After the vacation, I rejoined the guys I was practicing with and mentioned that I visited Sadowsky. I was surprised and saddened they were not familiar with the name. Perhaps the name is more prevalent among jazz players.

Depends on where you live I suppose. Every time I’ve visited Nashville it seemed like every other working band I saw had a Sadowsky bass in the mix.

My apologies. Perhaps I was misunderstood. Sadowsky Bass is absolutely known among bass players. Sadowsky also makes guitars but the guitar players I was playing with were not aware of the brand.

Someone once told me if you ever have a chance to own a Sadowsky, get one. I don't remember when that was or who said it but it stuck with me for years. When I was able to finally have a chance to buy one I did it blind online and will never look back!

Here's a little jam with my old band mates. I haven't played with these guys in 20 plus years, came up with the Bass line on my Will Lee MV5 on the fly. I've played with some great keyboardist over the years a few of which have done heavy duty work with some name acts, but Hal is right in there with the best of them.

We definitely have to iron out a few kinks for the next one. It was a wee bit warm today too - maybe it was a good thing the camera was further away than we would have liked, ...

I love my VW 5. It always sounds soooooooo good. The Blue Label flats are a perfect match for this bass.

Question for the group:

Do any of you regularly gig a Stingray 5, in addition to your Sadowsky basses, and do you have any issues going to that 17.5MM spacing, on the same gig.

My left hand is so much more comfortable with 19MM now, and I really just need to order the 'Musicman Sadowsky' I have Roger quoting, but thought I'd ask.

The Stingray is the other 'sound in my head', just like the PBass.

I usually just grab one 5'er, the 19mm Sadowsky or the 17mm Zon for live. When I get warmed up and find my groove I don't like messing between the two. This rule doesn't apply to switching between 4s and 5s however. Maybe that doesn't make sense but it's always suited me fine.

Just to show how fussy I am: when I finally decided to try 5-string in early Y2K, I wasn't really sure what I liked. My first was the great Fender Roscoe Beck fiver: I was comfy on that. Next, I decided to go for something a teensy bit more modern: a Modulus Quantum 5. I owned it for years, but realized that the narrow bridge spacing cramped my style (it was also 17.5mm, I think). I then bought a Mike Lull P5 -- this was before Sadowsky offered one. It had 18mm spacing, and I never got completely comfortable on that, either! In that time I also owned an MTD 535 (19mm) and Warwick Streamer Stage I 5 (20mm), and I was comfy on both. So, when the Sadowsky P5 came out, I immediately grabbed one and the rest is history.

All that said, I know a couple guys who switch between narrow and wide-spaced fivers and don't seem to notice. Maybe you can find a great deal on a pre-owned SR5 and try for yourself?

I had a Stingray 5 classic, and couldn't make it work. Was asking myself 'should you give it another whirl', because I LOVE that tone. There's probably something to me being a low-slung bass-wearer. I think the mid-chest strap-length guys wouldn't notice as much. My theory anyways. Also agree with your 'just go with Roger' reasoning, and have blamed/credited your clips of your Musicman-Dowsky for a while now!
