Club Sadowsky!!!

I've never owned a Fender but I have own/owned 5 Sadowskys.

I've owned 5 Fenders and 1 Sadowsky. Sold 4 of the Fenders, but kept 1, a FSR Precision special deluxe passive.
It sounds and plays fantastic. It has a Geddy Lee neck, BadAss II bridge, a noisless bridge pickup and a vintage p pickup. My Sadowsky hybrid pj sounds different, more high-end, almost hifi. The Fender sounds more dirty, almost as if it has a build-in tube. I wouldn't sell either of them. Besides that I have a MetroLine Will Lee natural satin coming half of october.

I’m not “techy” at all (so maybe impossible or not cost feasible)...but it sure would be nice if one could sort by type of bass (single cut, 5-21, etc) on the “recently sold” pages, for new build ideas??? @deepestend ?

Noted...you actually can do this now but making it easier is my next project (I just tackled the artist page this week).

Here’s how to do it now: click on a recently sold bass, say a verdine white.” At the top left of the page should be a blue trail with a link for “recently sold verdine white basses.” Clock that and you get them all on one page.

Also, there are tags on each sold instrument for stuff like “ebony fingerboard.” Click that and you get every instrument w an ebony fingerboard.

it needs some work, but you can use this now to get ideas despite the current crudeness.

I've also wondered about this. Being able to sort by wood, color, model, etc would be very helpful in deciding what I want on my own build.

Here's an example from a recently sold listing... obviously, there's not a category for "recently sold single cut basses" which needs to be remedied. Also, the tags aren't consistent for each sold instrument. Ex. maybe not every mango top is tagged. I need to go back through the sold listings on the site and fine tune everything. Still, this should get you part of the way there now.

Any other suggestions welcome!

I'm looking at either getting a Sadowsky Metro with Morado or a Roasted Maple fretboard. What could I expect tonally with each for those that have tried and know? I like a more precise and defined tone.

My main for 15 years was a '97 am std jazz V I bought brand spanking new (fresh out the box) from my local GC.. back in '97... . We were burglarized right after moving into our new home (2013) and the Fendah was taken (along with others). Ended up going through a few different brands for a while before I finally had the scratch to afford a well used Metro with SC's from the TB classifieds.

I hated it at first, couldn't tame it, didn't understand why a bass that looked like a Fender didn't sound like it... But then it hit me. I found "IT". The sound. The feel. Then I bought another one, and another one and another..

My take, Fender is the guy with every tool in his garage. A handyman that's good at everything but excels at nothing special. Enjoys domestic beer, tailgating and John Mellencamp. The Sadowsky is the guy in the velvet smoking jacket - confident, distinguished, enjoying an aged scotch while listening to jazz in a lounge with dark wooden panels and maroon undertones. Prefers yachting to "regular" sailing.

Though im still a fan of Fender but I no longer own any J styles. I normally bring a backup which is normally a fender P with flats. Still havent gigged by Sadowsky but I have taken it to rehearsal and its been glorious. the first ME I got was the gateway drug. Now I have my 5th Sadowsky on the way lol.

I still have some Fender P's and 6 string guitars. They all get a long in my stable.

this fender vs sadowsky thing comes up all the time. at the end of the day, they both have a solid place in the lineup, but for those that end up bonding more with the sadowsky basses as i have, the experience usually goes that they try it out solo, sounds ok, but what's the big deal. then they play it with a band or tracks, and the light goes on. lol

this is true, at least for me. My group recorded some tunes in a modest studio in the home of our part time guitarist, and I used my Sadowsky PJ. At the time of the recordings, I didn't hear the semifinal tracks, and based on what I heard during the recording process, thought the sound was good. I forgot about the recordings for awhile. A few months later, we were setting up for a gig in a large hall, and the sound man was playing tunes from our set lists. It seemed weird that he was playing tunes from our set lists exclusively. The bass tone was extraordinarily great. It made me stop the load-in and I listened intently. Deep, clear, musical, extremely even across all notes. I actually had to ask who the band was. It was us LOL. I was astounded. The tone was mesmerisingly good. I asked how much the bass tracks were tweaked prior to the final recording, and was told “hardly at all”. It was simply amazing how good the recorded tone was. Roger S (along with Dave Boonshoft, I believe) developed one of the finest preamps I have ever heard.

My experience proved to me that those preamps are magical, and listening to a Sadowsky instrument in the context of a band is vastly different (in a great way) than hearing it alone.

A few sources including a friend of mine have said that roasted maple is warmer than non-roasted -- seemed to be true on my friend's roasted-neck bass, but I only played it briefly and didn't do an "all else equal" comparison. I owned a couple of morado basses and thought that wood was snappier than other rosewoods. Based on this my hunch is morado would work better for you, but I'll defer to those who have direct experience with both.

I have a alder sadowsky and a roasted neck on my StingRay and though its not as bright as non roasted maple , It is still snappier than alder imo

Roger will chime in if I'm wrong but I think it was Alex Aguilar who was involved in developing the Sadowsky preamp.

oh yes, you are probably right. I just assumed that since Dave was associated with Aguilar, that he was involved.

Someone called it to my attention that the Club Sadowsky thread is the most viewed thread on all of Talkbass... can any mods verify this? We've got 4,005,624. Searching around and sorting the threads, I can't find any with more views.

I certainly get Club Sadowsky alerts way more than on any other threads I’m following. That said, I am really impressed with the civility and respect shown on this thread. Happy to be a member!
