I right I’m thinking the MS4 has 60s spacing and the MV4 70s? I have seen a lovely looking MS4 (all natural with transparent scratchplate chopped at first pickup - love that look) but it looks like 60s spacing?

I thought the V just means it has the PG and knob spacing for that. Ultra vintage I believe is full size body. I think it has to say 70s to have the closer to bridge spacing

Though im still a fan of Fender but I no longer own any J styles. I normally bring a backup which is normally a fender P with flats. Still havent gigged by Sadowsky but I have taken it to rehearsal and its been glorious. the first ME I got was the gateway drug. Now I have my 5th Sadowsky on the way lol.

I still have some Fender P's and 6 string guitars. They all get a long in my stable.

I hear ya as well. My 72 P bass with flats (refretted by a Roger himself like 25-30 years ago) is a one of a kind imo, just sounds like the perfect P bass to me. However, Since the arrival of my Sadowsky J Bass, my all original 76 Fender jazz that is just a Tank of a bass doesn’t get any action anymore and will likely go for sale soon. Both sound great but somehow I reach for my Sadowsky always and it never disappoints.

I believe, apart from a custom job through NYC, the 70's spacing Sadowsky is the UV70. I think the S in MS means "Standard" and denotes no pickguard. Somebody help me out here.

Here is the breakdown.

V = Vintage with pickguard.
S = Standard with no pickguard.
UV = Full size body
MV4 & MS4’s are 60’s pickup spacing.
UV70 is 70’s pickup spacing.

You are correct.

I should add the Ultra Vintage models are a full-sized body, vs the standard, slightly downsized body.

It's supposed to be active only. Would be a pleasant surprise if it's a passive/active control.

It is active/passive.
I would never make an instrument without a bypass for the preamp.

Only the MetroExpress made in China uses a different preamp, without VTC. All others have same preamp.

The preamp is the same. Just no VTC on the entry level model.

Which by the way, Sadowsky preamps seem especially prone to pickup up noise. I.E. radio stations, hum, electrical interference, etc. Any way to minimize? I've had several Sadowsky's now and they all seem prone to this.

We have only had this issue with our 5 string J pickups.... That is why we have move to a stacked design rather than a 3+2 coil design.

Talking about JJ single coils. Humbuckers are silent.

The single coils hum cancel when both are on together.

Hey Scuba, that is certainly an issue. But, I don’t believe the preamp is the culprit. My first Sadowsky was an RV5. It was phenomenal, except that when I stepped on stage for this gig:


(ca 2005)...the bass / amp / FOH nearly exploded. The problem was that neon sign behind me. The solution for that gig was to balance the pickups and leave it there for the gig.

More recently, I was struck by the single coil bug again, acquired some beautiful Ulyate’s, installed them in my Jazz 5 w/ Sadowsky preamp; and bang, there was both the single coil sound, but also the single coil hum. Shielding in the cavities helps, but doesn’t eliminate it. My Delano JMVC5’s we’re back in four days later. The only solution I’ve heard is there is a preamp that Pat Wilkins uses, which includes a dummy humcanceller, kind of like the Alembic Series preamp.

it would be great if Roger could navigate an upgrade to his preamp to incorporate a dummy humcanceller under the pickguard. That would allow single coils with no hum. But, until that happens, we’ve got this trade off.

Don’t know if any of that helps or not.

@Clark Westfield, beautiful bass! I'm prepared to be delighted by the Sadowsky/Warwick partnership, but I can't help feeling we're experiencing the end of a great era. Hope you enjoy your Satin for many, many years to come!

I will be stocking the new German made MetroLine basses and they will all receive their final inspection and setup from me personally! I think the future will be just as great as the past!

And that’s a 5-string! It is surprising how light some of these MEs are coming in at considering that they are solid body ash & alder basses! Anyone know why the differences between MIJ ME vs. ML weights? Just lucky with the batches of wood supplied for MEs or did wood shopper specifically try to source lighter stock or some other differences in manufacturer?
