Club Sadowsky!!!

I’m really excited to drop these into my NYC 5-21 on Monday morning. lve been looking for a truly hum cancelling 5 string jazz pickup for a while now. Since the Sadowsky stacks aren’t currently available for sale I figured I’d give these a shot. By all accounts that I’ve seen they should fit the bill

Here is a picture of my first Sadowsky. It’s a 2011 NYC 4-21 in Bora Blue Burst with a Quilted Maple Top. Awesome sound and playability. I’m very impressed with this bass and it will not be my last Sadowsky. In fact, I’m already looking for a Metroline model as a backup.

They sound great, but if I stick with them in this bass I'm going to need to shield the pickup cavities. I think I'm going to try them in a fretless fender that I have.

anyways. I recently purchased a RSD sadowsky metro express Jj 5 string. Great bass, none of the noise problems I’ve seen on YouTube, bass feels great, sounds great, but I bought it to mod it. To start I’d like to put new pickups in the bass, preferably emg pickups, but after measuring the pickups it seems that none of the j pickups on their site fit them. Any suggestions on pickup replacements similar to the emg j pickups? (Pic for attention)

I had some of those for a while. Really liked them! Sad I sold them, though I don't have anything to put them in.

Just wanted to note that EMG active pickups won't work with the Sadowsky preamp.

Did they used to have a different pot to use with the preamp with EMGs?

I'm not an expert on exactly why the active EMG pickups (the ones that take a battery, not the geezers) don't work, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't just a matter of switching out the pot.

Roger did a number of onboard preamp installs for me decades ago that teamed up the preamp with EMG J pickups. These were the active EMG type which did require a battery.

This was early 90’s and way before the VTC was introduced, which might be the sticking point as to why the EMG stuff won’t work now. Somewhere along the line, I fell out of love with EMG offerings and just used Sadowsky pickups. They also came stock in the Sadowsky basses I bought later on and were fantastic. EMG pickups are an absolute must in a Spector, though.

I just pulled the trigger on one of those Sadowsky China models. Are there any members that have picked up one. I am curious what your impressions are. It should be interesting seeing what Sadowsky can offer at that price point. I will follow-up with my impressions after I play it a little. I need another bass like a hole in the head but it was sale man!

I have one. I also purchased it from Specialty Traders. My bass was labeled as B-Stock due to some cosmetic issues so I was able to pick it up for a little less ($799$).



I’ve never had the opportunity to play a Sadowsky, so it will be interesting to see how your RSD compares.

Is that an ebony board? Dark blue/ebony/black hardware is gorgeous - if I ever custom order a Sadowsky, those features will be part of the mix!

I would give about anything to find a used 5 string in this same color and quilt figuring this one has. Gorgeous bass.
