I'll tell ya, I had been curious for awhile about a soapbar-equipped bass with pickups in the 60s position, but the videos I found just didn't do it for me. A little too round sounding, but I kept revisiting the idea because I know I like the Sadowsky soapbars (although I've only had them in a Modern 5-24 bass and that was a different animal because of the pickup spacing).

Glad I decided to bite on this bass - it sounds so much better than the videos I found online and was more in line with what I thought it would sound like - just fat and full. It won't replace my WL-5 nor my love for the grindy single coil tone, but man, it's such a good sounding bass.

Very cool, Jimbo is excellent and has flown under most people's radars. As many here may know, he got into Sadowsky after Jason Newsted (an Isbell fan) just flat out gave him a WL4!

On a related note, Jason and company just did a Metallica cover as part of the Black Album anniversary package. Not sure what bass Jimbo is playing.

Edit: On social media Jimbo did say he used the Newsted bass, along with a bunch of fuzz.:D

Dear hivemind,

I've got a question regarding the bridge on Sadowsky basses. With my google fu I didn't find an answer.

Is there a maximum string thickness that can be used with the Sadowsky bridge? I've had problems fitting a .130 Ernie Ball string in the bridge but didn't pay it too much attention back then. I'm contemplating putting TI flats on my modern 5, but I wouldn't want to buy these expensive strings and then find out, that I couldn't fit them on my bass.

A decade ago I put my set of TI flats on my CAR Sadowsky P5, and as I was playing the B string popped through the bridge because the ball end was too small (had to jerry-rig a fix). I blamed the string, because the ball end was barely bigger than the string itself. I eventually replaced the B string in that set, and noticed that the newer B had a larger ball, no issues staying in place.

It can be a challenge getting B strings through some bridges, but it's been years and I don't recall how much trouble I had with the TI B on my Sadowsky specifically. Bottom line is that I was able to get both the original B and replacement B to work.

The bass in the picture here is his new fretless. I was at the show and talked to him a little bit about it. He said that he likes it a lot. He recorded a few songs on the album with fretless and needed one to play live.

Wild! Super cool. Jimbo sounded great up in the "cheap seats." :) Which, I guess, is almost all of the the seats outside first 1/4 or so, but I like to sit at the top row in the middle.

Did you run into the Dobrato (The Dobrato - Dobrato Resophonic Guitars Grammy Winning Design) guy? Just by random chance I wandered into his store, saw what he all had and he mentioned he'd be there too.

Hi, same (maybe?) problem here... I've been using EB Slinky Bass .45-130 sets for ages, for ALL my basses, but never had any problem - except last time, I had difficulties when putting up the low B , but not with the endball (it is always correct sized), but the string thickness near the ball! Maybe it was thicker than usual, the string couldn't slim through the hole easily, you know, the B saddle is so close to the bridge's hole, that the string couldn't flex enough to make it, and the ball remained half inch away from the hole!
I hope it is clear what I wanna explain...
The solution was removing the screw, and the saddle, then I could pull the string fully to position, and then put back the saddle, and setting up the octave... it's weird. But I love so much these Ernie Ball strings, they give the essence of the wood's sound...

This is the nature of the Sadowsky bridge design, for better or for worse. I have no issues installing my favorite strings on my newer Sadowskys, which are D'Addario Nickel and Sadowsky Stainless. Most of the time I use D'Addario. The bridge is MUCH easier to work with using a tapered B string. Other bridges that allow a wider travel of the saddle for intonation purposes like a BadAss might be easier to use non-taper B strings with.

I’ve had low B issues occasionally. Love the Blue Label nickels for tone and feel, although they may lose their zing earlier than other brands. Photo from an earlier post: DR pure blues on top, BLN below. The pure blues low B wouldn’t fit on my 2019 NYC mod 5. So I just left the BLN low B on and changed out the rest of the set. Balance and brightness is fine…
