My first bass was a Fender P Lyte so I guess the PJ tone was baked into my head early. However I veered off of anything like a FSO for over 15 years, then one day picked up a Fender PJ at a music store and found the tone I was missing. Fast forward a couple years and I nabbed an NYC PJ off reverb and the rest is history.
The fat bottom end of the P pickup is what has me as I'm a finger style player and I don't slap often. There's just something to it for my ears that I can't replicate with a J. J's sound amazing to me in other people's hands but never mine. The only J I own that I can get along with is a Sire V7 because the bass eq on it is just ridiculously thick but it's not even in the same area code of a Sadowsky.
I find the mid boost on my Will Lee set to the higher frequency option gets me as close as I have ever been to a p sound without a p pickup.
Every few years I try and be a P bass guy too but my ears play games with me. The 'E' string just sounds wrong to me compared to a J or even a Stingray. Flats or rounds, it makes no difference. I love the P mids and tops but get down to G and that cloud comes back. I have a Sadowsky J4 and a J5 where even the B sounds great.
It's my ears, I know but I can't swap or trade them. I must have Jears.
Hi, need a little help/experience sharing. I got my Blade JB back to action this weekend and after 3 gigs (one more left... getting tired.. 
) I have something trouble with the Sadowsky PUs or/and preamp loaded. (It's from a Chinese Metroexpress)
Overall sound is nice and great, and everyone like it, but when slapping there is an issue with it: the thumb hit if it's too hard (I have a dynamic pluckin style) the sound starting 80-100 millisec is lost, regulated, like the pre was overdriven. It appears only in active mode. Mainly on the E string.
I made a record to demonstrate, I'll try to share that if I'll have time for it today. I link a photo about the wave.

My slap style is very much like this, and your attack and velocity is within normal.
When I hear something like this, my first thought is purity of the signal path. Looking into it is a chore - the first thing is that you need to eliminate all variables, making sure the issue repeats itself through any type of amplification, including amplifiers, sound systems, or computer monitors. If you get the same result while playing the bass through many different forms of amplification, You can then be sure it’s electronics in the bass.
After that, I’d make sure all the electrical connections in the bass are clean and solid. This means a clean input jack free of debris and oxidation, and shiny, solid solder joints all around. Dull looking solder joints are cold solder joints and could be a cause of this problem. Pay special attention to the solder joints on the input jack, the pickup wires going to the pots, and the grounding wire. You don’t want one little strand of wire going in, you want all of them included. You can also check to see if and wires are clamped under pots or other electronic components in a way they are not supposed to. I’d even check the condition and cleanliness of the plugs on any cables being used.
It’s very unusual that only the E string seems to be doing this. Just to be careful I’d check to make sure that the nut slot and bridge saddle are clean and debris free. I might even try installing a brand new E just to see if this still happens. It’s within the realm of possibility that it could be just the string.
Thanks for help, we'll check these things out. I'm using a Genzler Magellan and a Genz-Benz Shuttle6 in gigs, then today morning I tried it through directly my Focusrite 2i4 at home - same issue. At the gig, I suspected for the head and its preamp, but home it appeared the same without amp.
The strings are old, it can be a problem, but in passive mode there is no problem, so not likely...
I was just thinking about dirty pots - I know it’s new components, but sometimes something might get in there. You can turn each pot all the way up and all the way down rapidly about 10 times. This includes the EQ pots.
I believe, only the Warwick versions use Schaller. Japanese Metros and NYC use Dunlop dual design, IIRC!

This is my take too. In my case, I played J-basses pretty much exclusively for years so when I could order one, my first *brand new* Sadowsky was a Satin Jazz. During the build/waiting period, I fell hard for a Metro PJ. That sound in my head was now in my hands... the tone just moved me. I had a Verdine 5 on order before my Satin Jazz was even completed. Come to think of it, I haven't played the J-bass in well over a year. Or longer.
IMO having a Modern and a PJ in your stable can get you anywhere you'd like.
I volunteer at a local church once or twice a month. I took the new Sadowsky this morning. Here's a tune from today. The bass sits nicely in the mix.

Thanks Fran, I appreciate it. I bought this as solid black in 1989, but I had it refinished by Pat Wilkins several years ago. I like the look of the subtle grain of the alder.

I played the Sadowsky yesterday. That breathtaking neck was almost a distraction when the stage lights hit it
