I played an used RSD MetroExpress 5-string Jazz over the weekend, and was really pleasantly surprised by how well it played. My one concern is the electronics - I'm pretty used to my NYC Satin Deluxe with the VTC pre-amp, and am thinking the lack of that colored my opinion a bit and let me leave it in the store.

So would it be crazy to think of putting in a VTC pre-amp in a RSD ME should the stock pre-amp not measure up?

Not crazy at all. For me, the VTC is about the only thing I use on the preamp 99% of the time so it would be very important to have. But, that could also be accomplished with a VTC retrofit kit rather than the entire preamp.

Personally I like the idea of the full pre-amp replacement - fewer connections to have to make (with less opportunity to mess something up), and reversing the operation is simpler as well, should I want to move the pre-amp to another bass in the future.

Nothing too crazy, 5/21, alder body, brazillian rosewood 'board, unroasted neck (for now). A classic color (sonic blue, dakota red, burgundy mist- haven't decided yet) with a pickguard.

Only real variables are if I can get a solid lightweight alder body, and if the super j can do the humbucker/single coil as well, or if i'll just go with the stacked humbuckers. I'm more likely to switch between humbucker and single coil than I am to do the 60/70 switching. Ideally just a bass that I can use for lots of things and will be a joy to play :D I had a used one for a bit, was a little too light for me, but sounded and played great, and I do regret selling it.

I have 2 of the RSD basses, in my 4 string, I swapped out the pick-ups with Duncans, and installed the VTC, I ended up putting the stock pick-ups back in, I liked them much better. the 5 string I left stock, the preamp, while a little different, still sounds really good, and it gave me a little different tonal options.

No issues with noise on the pickups? My church stage has just about every device present to cause hum, and there are times where I won't have the pickup output balanced to counter it.

I've bought a used(almost new) complete Chinese Metroexpress preamp with PUs a few months ago (for swapping factory preamp and DiMarzios in my Blade Penta JB), and got hum - only when one pickup using. I prefer the balanced 50-50% sound, when the hum canceled, so not big issue for me. But the sound has improved so much, I can live with it... :D
it is said that vintage Jazzbasses had same issue also (I've never had any), but even so they were/are loved... I know I know, Mr. Sadowsky built up his reputation upgradin and fixing that Fenders that time... :)
The only bad feeling about it the hard handling potmeters - definitely not the same ones what my 2009 MIJ Modern Metroline has got... but this was a real bargain, I wanted to try it.
The missing VTC is another tiny thing for me - using it just slightly sometimes. I used to tweak the treble/high on amp for constant settings.
