Using the vtc against the active boosts is central to getting the best from a Sadowsky ime. Yes it is counter intuitive as you say, but for some magic reason it works.

Personally I have the bass up about 25% and keep the treble just a shade below that on my Verdine. When I had a satin J I boosted the bass a little bit more for my liking and then used the VTC to adjust anything necessary as a set goes on. VTC is the magic sauce, quoting someone from this thread, "takes you from Motown to modern."
+1 to all. I was pretty sure that @SteveC just needed to twirl some knobs and play in a band setting to hear the magic of the active boost against the VTC.
It’s interesting how each Sadowsky has its own sweet spot(s) despite having the same preamp. My TYO Verdine needs more bass boost than the other Japanese Sadowskys. And the NYC PJ needs very little. First world phenomena indeed.

Wish this would turn already... It's painful to see because it just stirs up the GAS. I play 5 stringers 95% of the time so only keep a single 4 in the arsenal. The thought of two 4-string NYCs would probably be a bit irre$ponsible on my part. I truly love the one I have, it's my Sunday-drive. "Be content, Heavy. Come on!"

It can certainly do the "P/J thing," and different flavors thereof. I think it also does a very good P-bass tone with the neck pickup solo'd, but it's obviously a P-bass with an ebony board, which is not necessarily the "classic" P-bass tone. It isn't really designed to do a JJ tone, but it's as close to a JJ as any other quality P/J can get, if that makes any sense.

I'm sure this covered ground but I just got a new Metroline Will Lee 5 string Jazz bass. (Can i join the club?) I was looking at a SKB hardshell case for it. A Fender jazz bass will fit in it. Will a 5 string Sadowsky fit in it as well? Are the dimensions close between a Fender and Sadowsky jazz bass? Does it make a difference if its a 5 string vs 4?
