I had a beautiful Lakland 5594 that was the same for me - always fiddling with the tone and not getting the sound I was after. It also had a chunky neck that was a strain on my fretting hand so I sold it. One of my basses has 18mm spacing and the slightly smaller neck profile is really comfortable to play.
+1 to the 18mm profile. I’ve had to go to the 2007-ish era Fender Jazz Deluxes, with Sadowsky Onboard retrofit to get close to my prefs. That was one design aspect Fender got right. IMO.

It would be great to see a Sadowsky P

Didn't you have a black PJ, @kevk, or did I dream that? Killer Will Lee - love that one!
Did ^^^…only sold because it was 1.875 nut, AND my good friend always wanted it. ;) Didn’t want to chance ruining any mojo modding it (and it definitely possessed major mojo…)

Replaced with my Olinto P5 (pj)…MUST have a P5 in the stable.

That WL5 won’t go anywhere, period…still my #1 fav bass. Now using Sadowsky Black Nickel 40’s. Just an awesome stock build—fortunate timing to purchase from the website!

I usually run my UV70 5 string passive, but decided to try the pre the other day for more booty.
Even with the treble rolled flat and the passive tone at 50%, there was still a high end hiss making it unusable. Had to go back to passive.
Anyone else had this? Any suggestions?
Already tried a fresh battery.
Thanks.

Never been an issue with the two Japan metrolines I have owned. Sorry can't help further unless you are picking up some sort of electrical interference.

FWIW, my 2009
It's not interference. It's a hiss not a buzz. :)
Metro Japan UV70 5 string with Sadowsky HC pickups has no hiss, even with the treble boosted its a negligible amount of noise. However, in active mode, I t can get interference from my cellphone or laptop if it’s too close. But that noise is more of a very high frequency buzz/hiss sound
