which of course gets down to what's important to you about the purchase of a premium instrument. to me, the investment doesn't matter as much, because even though I do sell instruments as needed at some point, i do not purchase, at least high end instruments, with the resale as a primary criteria.
at least for me, when i buy at the high end, i try to buy keepers... especially since i may order custom options that may not be as valuable (and may even hurt the value) to other potential owners. i customize specifically for my personal preferences, regardless of what may be most popular on resale.

Is all about personal preference but most importantly is a matter of the "perception of value" (and quality), German customshop basses don't have (in my eyes and the eyes of many) the same "value"of a Sadowsky NYC, and that perceived value is also in par with the value/cost of buying a used sadowsky bass....my opinion!
that's a very good point. for me, Roger has become a good personal friend, which makes a pretty tight bond in my mind between Sadowsky instruments and Roger himself, so even for my personal preferences, that's a big deal.
but if i did not have that privilege, and was shopping more generically for high end Fender-ish basses, i don't know if i'd feel as strongly... especially since i do feel like Warwick does fantastic work from a quality perspective. i could just never develop a long term relationship with any of their internally created products. i'm just too much of a Fendery kinda' guy.
All those Vic signature models
I've been blessed to own a German Custom shop and a NYC Sadowsky. Both was really nice basses but the NYC was better in every way including the most important and that was tone. That NYC was the best Jazz bass I've owned and it's not close.
