Agree; I could live without VTC; Played Fender American P basses [2] from '75 to 2012 and always had tone full on for 1K+ Gig.s and a few recording sessions; used right hand position and striking adjustments
Never liked what tone control did; to my ears.

I really never use the treble unless my strings are super dead. Just maybe 20% for a little bass boost and utilize the tone for more cut (as I would with a passive bass). It’s why VTC is a must for me. In general I hate treble. I want a passive sound, but with a little more bottom. The Sadowsky pre is almost the only pre I like and I have them multiple other basses. 1. It does not color the tone. 2. No matter if I want to go passive or active, I have a tone control option…call me “old school”, but it’s a absolute must if you want to live on the vintage side of things.

I put a Sadowsky pre w VTC is a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz 4 with Duncan Design pickups. Sounded Incredible. Shockingly good for a $300 bass.

Swap out the tuners for some genuine fenders or Hipshot USA ones and it will get even better! I did this on a Squier. I recorded before and after. The difference was night and day just swapping the tuners and I would say a bigger difference than switching to a “better” bridge. Cheers to great tone!!
Got my Metro Express today from Sweetwater, and the truss rod wheel is broken!!!!

How in the heck did that happen? This is a brand new bass, right? And you are here in the US for a short visit? That sux!
Just curious, is the wheel that you put a rod into to turn the truss rod? Or does it just spin when trying to adjust the truss rod?
Ok, it’s not broken, the wheel is just loose from the truss rod. I fixed it myself.

How do you loosen tension on the truss rod without also loosening the wheel?
Sounds like it could use some permanent LockTite on the threads.
The truss rod has been re-designed and the issue corrected.
Thank you Sir for taking the time and effort to respond. Pretty much what I thought but confirmation direct from the source makes it gospel AFAIC. Not entirely sure what was meant by ".. (if) you do not desire a warmer tone", tonally I'm getting what I was looking for (solid bottom with punch and note definition) and I'm quite happy with my purchase. Thank you!
Just to clarify....if your treble and bass controls are flat (zero) and you desire a warmer, darker tone, you want the VTC. I you don't need it warmer/darker, you don't need the VTC.
