While I do agree with this, I would also say that sometimes it's far easier to just downtune a 4 string.

Especially in heavy music where the riff constantly goes back to the open D, it would be a royal pain to have to go back to the 3rd fret of the B string every other note.

+1.
For this specific case, the detuner really makes more sense... where it's handy to be able to pedal a low D maybe while you do other stuff. If I were in a different kind of band that did that kinda' thing a lot more, I'm sure I'd feel differently about detuners.

Solution: have a lot of basses or get used to playing one way or the other.

+1 A 4 banger w/ D-tuner & a 5'er covers any tuning situation! Especially how you describe above.

#4529 is my favorite looking Sadowsky Jazz. As soon as the funds allow I'm going to order one with the same specs.

I played that bass on Friday and really enjoyed it. The ziricote-topped 5-24 is a cool bass and played wonderfully, but the tone of #4529 was the best of the bunch in my humble opinion.
