TB'er JoshB is in the area for a while, so we had a small gtg at my house. It's been a while, and we had to do some catchin' up. He was asked to play some over this weekend, but all he was given to use was a G&L Tribute 2500 with ultra-dead Slinky strings, and a ski jump for a neck.
I "rescued" him... let him borrow my Metro PJ5.
I expect a "happy post" here at some point...
His first comment after picking it up and playing it a little was, "this isn't an NYC?".

Well I guess I better chime in here I've had this girl for around 8 months or so I think. AJBrown can prob confirm that since he was kind enough to let me adopt her (those adoption fee's are a B&#$!!!!, But worth every penny

Random question as well. My neck has back bowed quite a bit which direction for the truss rod adjustment?? Ne way here's some holidays porn for you all.

If the neck need relief, turn the wheel towards the top horn of the bass. If the action has gotten high, turn the wheel the other way. One quarter turn at a time, check, keep going till its straight

Other folks have more or less answered your question, but I like to teach a man to fish, rather than just hand him a fish, so here's my spin...
Most typically, the purpose of the truss rod is to compensate for string tension. Basically, without a truss rod, the neck would always look like a ski jump with the strings tuned up, as they pull the headstock forward and "cup" the neck as a result. The truss rod is installed in the neck such that, as you tighten (shorten) it, tend pulls the opposite direction to make the neck flat again.
All you need for the above is a single action truss rod, as all you have to do is tighten (shorten) it enough to compensate for string tension on a neck that is flat with no tension on it.
Things get a bit more interesting with dual action truss rods.
The reason to have a dual action truss rod, is if you have a (IMHO rare) case where the neck is naturally backbowed enough that even string tension can't pull it flat. In that case, you literally have to use the truss rod to work WITH the strings and PUSH the neck flat by "lengthening" it. IMHO, this is a case where the neck either has a design/build flaw, or the wood develops a condition the builder couldn't forsee, after instrument completion.
I prefer the rare triple action truss rod. It performs the above functions, but the third action is a subsonic vibration that reminds the drummer where 1 is. I also briefly played a quad action truss. The fourth function was to send a small shock to the guitar player to get him to end his solo. I had to get rid of it after a blues jam gig where someone ended up in the hospital. I warned the guy that taking triple digits worth of bars might be dangerous...

Oh, we're gonna talk trussrod variant preferences now?
I prefer the Quad Rod, the 5th function being the "it senses my tumbler of Markers Mark is getting low" and refills it with the proper ratio of ice/bourbon.

Then there are the dual truss rods! Not only can you adjust the bow but also twist too! My Alembic of 16 years had that and it required a gentle touch when tweaking the neck!
