Makes sense, and per the above comment on 'ringing truer', while I'm sure it is subtle, less glue and fewer seams would seem to always be a good thing in instrument construction.

Yeah, the theory seems plausible, but I really question whether anyone would actually be able to tell on a gig, and maybe even in the studio. IMHO on that tho.

One piece body is purely esthetics. I don't believe that glue plays a part in an instrument sound, unless you create a body made of glue with thin lines of wood to hold the glue together

I disagree and feel that one piece of wood will vibrate differently and more consistently then two pieces glued together...How much of that do you really hear?....

I agree... it makes perfect sense that an object with a distinctive structure will behave differently regarding vibration if it's structure is interrupted or not. However, as I think you're saying here, that difference is most likely not detectable in this application, so it ends up essentially being purely aesthetic for all intents and purposes.

If time allows and I finish wiring my new studio this weekend I will try and record some tracks and post.

I've got several ash bodied NYC Sadowsky 4's that kind of fit this conversation a bit:

1. Older early 90's Sadowsky Standard 4 - one piece body, non-chambered
2. Older later 90's Sadowsky Vintage 4 - two piece body, non-chambered
3. A Will Lee that I just got in a couple of days ago - I think two piece body and for sure is chambered.

I'll do my best to record some tracks if I can get all my gear installed and wired......and we'll see how things sound on tape using the same set-up only with different basses!


Either way.....they should all sound amazingly good!!!!

+1 I'm sure there's a difference, it just that I'm also sure we can't hear it and even if you do we can't positively point the reason.

Same thing - even if we do hear a difference you can't be sure why. I can definitely see a case of two one-piece body basses when one of them sounds more like another two-pieces bass. Hope I'm clear...English.

I think string brand/age would make way more difference than one vs. two piece body (assuming the same playing style/attack).

I agree. Tiny sound difference (if at all) and too many variables to determine what comes from where.

BTW, regarding glue, so many great basses use multiple laminations... much more glue than a two piece body, and no sound problems.

Jonno is correct about wood coming from the same tree. There are just too many variables.
